25TH ANNIVERSARY - FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL

Built in 1961 to prevent East Berliners fleeing to the West, the Berlin Wall became the symbol of the divide between communism and democracy. On 9 November 1989, the Berlin Wall was finally smashed down after East German government officials announced that the borders between East and West Germany were now open.

BURKINA FASO - POLITICS

Following a wave of protest against his rule, Blaise Compaore stepped down last week as president of Burkina Faso, after 27 years in power. Without a clear successor, his resignation led to confusion as to who would assume the power until elections are called, while two different military leaders announced they were stepping in.
