STORYLINE

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez criticised the United States'' response to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti on Sunday, accusing them of "occupying Haiti militarily."

Speaking on his weekly television show, "Alo Presidente", Chavez referred to comments made by Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, who said that he was concerned about the US deployment of troops in Haiti following the devastating earthquake there on Tuesday.

"It appears that the United States is occupying Haiti militarily, taking advantage of the tragedy," Chavez said.

He also questioned the work the soldiers were carrying out on the Caribbean Island.

"You see the images, in the streets, the people are desperate, where are these soldiers?"

Chavez challenged US President Barack Obama to send doctors and aid supplies "instead of sending soldiers."

Obama has issued an order allowing selected members of the military''s reserves to be called up to support operations in Haiti, the White House said on Sunday.

Reports of violence in Haiti have been hindering rescue workers trying to help earthquake victims, a top official leading the US government''s relief efforts in the country said.

Lieutenant General Ken Keen of the US Southern Command said on Sunday that US forces were working with United Nations peacekeepers to provide security.

Keen said about one-thousand US troops were in Haiti and that three-thousand more were working from ships.

More than 12-thousand US forces are expected to be in the region by Monday.

An estimated 100-thousand or more people may have died in the magnitude-7.0 quake that struck the island on Tuesday.
