Climate change protesters blocked the entrance to the London Stock Exchange on Thursday morning, by gluing themselves to a wall and to each other.

The activists wore electronic display signs reading: "Climate emergency."

Environmental protesters have blocked London roads and bridges in recent days in an attempt to raise awareness of climate change.

The group Extinction Rebellion says it will end its remaining demonstrations at Marble Arch and Parliament Square on Thursday.

The organisers said protesters will focus on the financial industry on Thursday "to demand they tell the truth about the devastating impact the industry has on our planet."

Extinction Rebellion vowed to escalate its campaign of disruption if the British government doesn't step up action against climate change.

Protesters took to the streets of London on Wednesday to draw attention to air pollution levels in the British capital.

On the eve of Clean Air Day, the Extinction Rebellion group stopped traffic in Camden, a tourist hotspot in a central part of the city.

One protester described air pollution levels in London "horrendous", saying that they significantly exceeded the levels recommended by the World Health Organization.

Those caught up in the resulting traffic jam, however, were divided over the merits of the act of disobedience.

"This is really not working", said a motorist waiting for protesters to clear the road, suggesting they should choose locations with less traffic and aim to tackle climate change through legislation.

Others held up on their way to work stressed that "it's ok, everybody has a right to do that".

Protesters were apologetic, but made clear they fear that time has run out. "We are not going to have a future if people don't start to act now", according to one activist.

Another protester said that "petitions, marches, it does nothing", adding that "non-violent civil disobedience is the only way to bring people's attention to it".

Earlier in the year, the group known for staging direct-action protests against climate change, has set up camps at major points in the UK capital including Oxford Circus, Waterloo Bridge and Westminster.

"We don't want to inconvenience people, we know that people are busy and it's not our goal to make them stand in traffic. But we feel that traditional matters, collectivism and petitioning our representatives hasn't worked. So direct action is our as our last chance."

3. Signs (English) reading: "Let Camden breathe" and "Climate and ecological emergency now"

4. Close of car tire with protesters in background

5. SOUNBITE (English) Charles Stevenson, protester and student from Switzerland:

6. Various of traffic, brought to standstill by protesters

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Alam Mohammad, Londoner caught up in traffic jam caused by protest:

Journalist (off screen): "But they say 'We tried that, for decades, we tried the legislative route and it didn't work'. What do you tell them?"

Bruce: "I think you try harder, because this is not working. This isn't working. It really isn't."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Kathie Conn, protester and Londoner:

"Petitions, marches - it does nothing. I mean, no what to stop... nonviolent civil disobedience is the only way to bring people's attention to it. We are always sorry that we inconvenience people, but at this point there is no choice. There's really no choice."

About one hundred students held a demonstration in front of the Elysee Palace in Paris on Friday, shouting slogans and holding banners calling for climate justice.

Sitting on the pavement on France's hottest day on record, the protesters vowed to stay put until the French government takes decisive action against climate change.

"We have talked enough, so we will stay here longer and maybe afterwards they will listen more to what we have to say," one protester said.

The protest was jointly organised by Extinction Rebellion and Youth for Climate.

The protest comes as French President Emmanuel Macron was away in Japan, attending the G20 summit.

4. SOUNDBITE: (French) Nina Lazard, 21, student:

"Students organised this action of occupation in front of the Elysee. The goal is to stay as long as possible and to show in front of the Macron residency, who unfortunately is in Japan, that we are here, that we are going to be mobilised, that we are ready for confrontation. We will really do civil disobedience. We are ready to block infrastructures, to block polluting enterprises, factories. We want to be much more offensive."

5. Pan from policemen to students blocking the street in front of Elysee

6. Police spokesperson, UPSOUND (French): "What I propose you is to compose a delegation in order to be received by the Elysee. In the meantime we want you to stay on the sidewalk."

8. SOUNDBITE (French) Nathan Gael, protester:

9. SOUNDBITE (French) Alice (second name not given), protester:

Climate activists from the Extinction Rebellion group blocked main roads in Chile's capital on Friday night and projected their logo onto the side of a skyscraper to demand government action on climate change.

The group, which was established in the UK in 2018, wants to put pressure on delegates from over 190 countries who will be descending on Santiago later this year to participate in the United Nations climate change summit.

Chile's President Sebastián Piñera announced in June a programme to withdraw eight coal-fired power plants in the next five years and the total decarbonization of the national energy grid by 2040.

There are currently 28 coal-fired power plants that produce 40% of the nations energy demands.

Hundreds of young people across Latin America called for the containment of fires sweeping parts of the Amazon, amid increasing international pressure on Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to do more to combat deforestation.

Bolsonaro on Friday authorized use of the military to battle the massive blazes.

Meanwhile the protesters demonstrated outside of the Brazilian diplomatic mission in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, urging Brazil to do more to fight the fires.

Similar protests took place in Colombia's capital Bogota and in Lima, Peru.

Bolsonaro has previously described rainforest protections as an obstacle to economic development, sparring with critics who note that the Amazon produces vast amounts of oxygen and is considered crucial in efforts to contain global warming.

An Associated Press journalist who travelled to the Amazon region on Friday saw many already deforested areas that had been burned.

Charred trees and fallen branches were seen around Porto Velho, the capital of Rondonia state, which borders Bolivia.

In some instances, the burned fields were adjacent to intact livestock ranches and other farms, suggesting the fires had been managed as part of a land-clearing policy.

Neighbouring Bolivia and Paraguay have also struggled to contain fires that swept through woods and fields and, in many cases, were set to clear land for farming.

Fires are common in Brazil in the annual dry season, but they are much more widespread this year.

Brazilian state experts reported nearly 77,000 wildfires across the country so far this year, up 85% over the same period in 2018.

Just over half of those fires have occurred in the Amazon region.

Brazil contains about 60% of the Amazon rainforest.

9. Various of protesters holding placards, protesting against climate change

Protesters in South Africa joined the major global climate strike movement on Friday, with thousands taking to the streets in 18 cities and towns across the country calling for efforts to save the planet from climate catastrophe.

Braving the sweltering heat, thousands of South Africans took part in the worldwide march and loudly voiced their concerns about climate change ahead of a major United Nations summit which will be held in New York on Monday.

"We're marching because we are wanting to stop climate change, we're wanting to save the planet. We're going to do that by reducing our fossil fuels and helping our environment and our companies in South Africa to clean and [use] renewable energy sources," said a protester in Johannesburg named Covania.

"We're here to raise our voices. We know that climate change has already started, and it's killing us. We are here to tell them, our leaders, to take serious action," said another activist.

Commitments by world leaders to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees are falling short of the mark, with the earth's temperature already being 1.42 degrees warmer than last century. As 2019 is expected to be the hottest year since the turn of the millennium, worries are growing.

"If we cannot stay beneath that, then we are threatening to trigger a whole number of tipping points, we've seen what's happened with the Arctic sea ice - within three to five years, there will be none left, that will make the world a lot hotter place. If the world gets hotter, the methane from underneath the sea and trapped in Antarctica and the Arctic [will be released, which is] 87 times more powerful than CO2," said Rehad Desai, a spokesman for the Extinction Rebellion Gauteng activist group.

"It's going to affect everybody rich or poor. Doesn't matter who you are, where you are in the world, it's going to influence you. So it's going to force us to work together, if we don't work together, we won't survive. And if we don't abide by the rules of nature, we also won't survive," said Justin Friedman, another activist.

Young people in 160 countries around the world joined the protests, calling for a climate emergency to be declared before it's too late.

Activists from the Extinction Rebellion movement blocked a major road intersection in the German capital, Berlin. on Monday at the beginning of what was billed as a wide-ranging series of protests demanding new climate policies.

Around 1,000 people blocked the Grosser Stern, a traffic circle in the middle of the city's Tiergarten Park dominated by the landmark Victory Column, in a protest that started in the early hours.

Members of Extinction Rebellion have also set up a camp outside Chancellor Angela Merkel's office, reflecting dissatisfaction with a climate policy package drawn up last month by her government, ahead of what it called an "international rebellion" starting on Monday.

It says protests are planned in 60 cities worldwide.

Founded in Britain last year, the movement, also known as XR, now has chapters in some 50 countries.

Activists with the Extinction Rebellion movement blocked roads across major European cities on Monday, kicking off a wide-ranging series of protests demanding much more urgent action against climate change.

In Paris, several hundred activists blocked access to one of the French capital's central squares, the Place du Châtelet, and set up a makeshift camp where many were planning on spending the night – several if the police let them.

A well-organised group also took over a bridge and two major thoroughfares in the city, blocking traffic with haystacks and sitting in the middle of the road.

Founded in Britain last year, Extinction Rebellion, also known as XR, now has chapters in some 50 countries.

The group said the protests on Monday were taking place in 60 cities worldwide.

You might come from a variety of different groups but we all stand against a system that's destroying the planet and mankind and we're looking to change that because we can't just have little changes, we want a real big change – we don't want reforms in fact, we want a revolution. We want to build a better world in which we can all live together."

We're also doing this for those in power even if they can't quite realise that. They should be doing things for us but they're not and the decisions that they're taking at the moment put us all at risk in the short term so we're doing it for them. Environmental activists in London gathered at Trafalgar Square on Monday, as part of demonstrations staged by the Extinction Rebellion movement in big cities around the globe on Monday to demand much more urgent action against climate change.

Protesters held up signs reading "money is worthless on a dying planet" and "change is now".

Actress Juliet Stevenson said that those bothered by the disruption caused by the movement should "focus on the disruption to the planet, to the climate", which is "on a different scale".

Earlier, protesters playing steel drums marched through central London as they kicked off two weeks of activities designed to disrupt the city.

London's Metropolitan Police said some 276 climate activists had been arrested.

Extinction Rebellion said protesters were arrested as they blocked Victoria Embankment, outside the Ministry of Defence.

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Juliet Stevenson, actress and climate protester:

"You think, if you don't like disruption then focus on the disruption to the planet, to the climate, to the waters and to the oceans and the sky. That disruption is on a different scale. And the second thing I'd say is, you know, a hundred years ago the suffragettes were doing this or you and I wouldn't be able to vote. And they were called criminals and troublemakers and thrown in jail and force-fed and now there's a plaque to them in the House of Commons to honour the memory of these heroines of history."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Justin (no surname given), protester:

"Ten years ago I looked at climate and got to recognise the horrendous risks of climate change and since then I've been doing what I can to try and get the word out that we shouldn't be putting out the carbon emissions we are and taking on the horrendous climate risk that we face especially with 2 girls. One an 18-year-old and one a 22-year-old. I'll be dead before things get really bad, but they'll be there to live through what potentially we can see which is what David Atonborough says is the possible collapse of civilisation."

13. Set up of Nick Schiaas, protester

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Nick Schiaas, who is 64 today and protesting on his birthday:

"Because we realise what is going to happen to the climate and what is gong to happen to the world as a result of it and so few people really seem to understand the facts that we are here for a bit of publicity and tell the government that at least some of us know what is going on."
