16. Sun rising behind the smoke of wildfire

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of residents evacuated because of a raging wildfire in north-eastern Spain were anxious to return to their homes and assess the damage on Monday.

They said the wildfire began on Sunday afternoon and quickly spread out in several directions, at one point almost surrounding their town, El Pont the Vilomara.

"Everything was lit up on all sides," said 76-year-old José Montiagudo, who has lived in the area for almost all of his life.

Many residents tried in vain to pass roadblocks to check up on their homes and animals left behind.

Authorities deployed dozens of firefighting planes and helicopters to try to contain the spreading flames that ravaged several homes and burnt more than 1,600 hectares (3,953 acres).

More than 30 forest fires around Spain have forced the evacuation of thousands of people.

The fires are fueled by fierce heat - part of a wall of high temperatures moving across Europe.

Forecasters have warned of temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) for Monday.

Heat waves and drought tied to climate change have made wildfires harder to fight.

Scientists say climate change will continue to make weather more extreme and wildfires more frequent and destructive.

STORYLINE:

People in Madrid were fending off the heat as forecasters in Spain warned of temperatures above 40 C (104 F) on Monday.

Visitors to the Spanish capital could be seen making the most of the fountains to cool down, while some used hand fans to try and stay cool.

Brooke Reeves, a student from Texas, said she was generally used to the heat but what she was experiencing in Spain was "unreal".

"I'm just trying to stay hydrated. It is really hot," she added.

A heat wave is broiling Europe and the fierce heat has fueled blazes in both Spain and France.

Teresa Ribera, Spain’s minister for ecological transition, described her country as “literally under fire” as she attended talks on climate change in Berlin.

According to Spain's Carlos III Institute, which records daily temperature-related fatalities, 237 deaths were attributed to high temperatures from July 10-14.

That was compared to 25 temperature-related deaths the previous week.

The heat wave in Spain is forecast to ease on Tuesday, but the respite will be brief as temperatures rise again on Wednesday, especially in the tinder-dry western Extremadura region.

People in some parts of Europe are sweltering under intensive heat waves that have been forecast to last for several weeks. France issued a red alert for 15 provinces and an orange alert for 51 others on Sunday, the French meteorological agency said. Most parts of France are expected to see the hottest day on Monday, with the maximum daytime temperature exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some areas. The heat wave is expected to last until Tuesday. As of Sunday, six days of wildfires in southwest France have burned more than 100 square kilometers and forced more than 16,000 people to evacuate. The fire even spread as far as the beaches in Bordeaux, a popular holiday destination. The local fire department said high temperatures and strong winds overnight made fighting the blaze difficult. As of Sunday, Spain has experienced nearly a week of hot weather, with the highest temperature reaching 45.7 degrees Celsius. According to the Carlos III Health Institute, 360 people died in the heat wave last week. Dozens of wildfires continued to rage across Spain as of Sunday, cutting off roads and forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes as firefighters battled through the night to contain the blazes. The State Meteorological Agency issued a high temperature warning on Sunday, saying the highest temperature in parts of northern Spain could reach 42 degrees Celsius. The Met Office of the United Kingdom issued its first ever red heat warning on Friday, with parts of the country expected to see record-breaking extreme temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius on Monday and Tuesday.

STORYLINE:

Several Western European countries, including France and Spain, continued on Sunday to fight devastating forest fires, triggered by a heat wave that could break temperature records in the coming days.

In Spain, about 20 forest fires were still active and out of control in different parts of the country, from the south to the north.

In Galicia (northwest) the fires devastated some 4,500 hectares during the week, according to the authorities.

And in the province of Malaga, in Andalusia (south), firefighters managed to stabilize a fire in the Sierra de Mijas, which destroyed some 2,000 hectares, local authorities said.

The flames forced the evacuation of just over 3,000 people, but 2,000 were able to return to their homes.

"We have not stopped working all night," said the Andalusian Minister of Agriculture, Carmen Crespo, on public television, referring to the work of the firefighters.

The meteorological agency had forecast "significantly high" temperatures in most of the territory. It was the town of Don Benito, near Badajoz (west), which recorded the highest temperature in the country, with 43.4 ºC.

On Sunday in Torrejón de Ardoz, on the outskirts of Madrid, a 50-year-old man died of heat stroke when he was out for a walk. A day earlier, a 60-year-old cleaning worker had died in the capital for the same reason, according to local authorities.

The fight against the flames claimed the lives of several members of the emergency personnel, the most recent of a firefighter who died of burns on Sunday night in the province of Zamora (northeast).

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, expressed on Twitter his "condolences and affection for the family and colleagues of the brigade member."

"There are never words to thank the immense work of those who fight in front of the fire without rest," he added.
