Legendary U-S singer Diana Ross has landed at New York's J-F-K International Airport after her run-in with security officials at London's Heathrow Airport.

The singer was detained in the U-K for more than four hours after a security guard charged Ross with allegedly assaulting her.

Ross claims that the security guard made her feel very uncomfortable during a body search.

The former Supremes leader said she had been treated like a common criminal, but has no plans to prosecute the security guard.

Soul legend Diana Ross finally touched down in New York on Wednesday afternoon, after the former Supremes singer was released from British police custody.

Ross was visibly shaken by her five hour ordeal.

She was arrested after allegedly assaulting a security guard who submitted Ross to a body search.

Ross said she had reacted in response to the officer's intrusive examination.

SOUNDBITE: (English)

"I travel a lot, and the security checks they use, they use metal detectors. This woman went all around my body and up and down my legs with her hands, and I felt very uncomfortable about it. And I wanted to complain and no one would listen to me, and I actually reacted because I was very upset. And I tried to complain and nobody paid attention."

Question: "Are you going to sue?"

Answer: "No."

SUPER CAPTION: Diana Ross

She gave A-P-T-N more details about the incident.

SOUNDBITE: (English)

"I was treated like a criminal, she should have been the one treated that way."

Question: "Will you return to Britain?"

Answer: "I have to, Britain is part of my work."

Question: "Did you get an apology?"

Answer: "No, I didn't get an apology, no."

Question: "Were you in a police cell?"

Answer: "I wasn't in a cell, but I was closed in a room for five hours, I was offered a glass of ice tea."

SUPER CAPTION: Diana Ross

However, Ross did not seem to bear any grudge against the British people.

SOUNDBITE: (English)

"A woman puts her hands between my legs and on my breasts, and I was very, very (breaks off)."

Question: "Did she apologise?"

Answer: "No, she did not."

Q: "What are your feelings towards the British police now?"

A: "I thought they were nice, British Airways was nice, the police were nice, but they did their job, which meant that I sat in a police station like a criminal for five hours, and I felt really frightened, I was scared, I'm all alone, I don't have security people or anything, I could make two telephone calls."

No charges have been made against the 55-year-old star.

British police said no further action would be taken.

English/Nat DIANA ROSS HEADS HOME AFTER BRUSH WITH BRITISH LAW

Story: Diana Ross

Date: September 22nd

Location: NewYork/London

American soul diva DIANA ROSS was arrested Wednesday at Heathrow Airport after allegedly assaulting a security officer. She set off a metal detector before boarding a BA Concorde flight to New York and was being searched by hand when the alleged incident took place. It is thought she was angered by the search and attempted to `frisk' the security guard. She then boarded the aircraft, but was later escorted off by police.

Ms. Ross, 55, was detained after a female security officer, who had attempted to make a body search on the singer, complained of being assaulted.

British Airways confirmed that Ms. Ross had been due to travel on the 10.50 a.m. Concorde flight to New York.

Asked about the reported arrest, Scotland Yard said: \"We can confirm that a woman was arrested at Heathrow Airport in connection with an alleged assault on a female security officer.

The incident took place while Diana Ross was waiting together with other passengers for routine security checks prior to boarding a flight. She was taken into custody at Heathrow police station.

She left Heathrow's police station flanked by five police officers and was whisked away in the back of a black chauffeur-driven Mercedes.

Despite the days events, Miss Ross remained positive but refused to comment other than to praise the work of the police.

After five hours of questioning the pop diva was finally released late in the afternoon.

Scotland Yard says she was warned, but not charged with an offence.

Ross, who recently separated from her Norwegian industrialist husband Arne Naess, had been in Britain to shoot a video.

Later the same day she returned to the US and was greeted by a phalanx of reporters at New York's JFK airport. She was far more outspoken after arriving on home soil and said that the security guard made her feel very uncomfortable during a body search.

The former Supremes leader said she had been treated like a common criminal, but has no plans to prosecute the security guard.

However, Ross did not seem to bear any grudge against the British people.

No charges have been made against the 55-year-old star.

British police said no further action would be taken.

Diana Ross has had chart topping success with numerous hits including the singles 'Baby love', 'Stop in the name of love' and 'Chain Reaction.

The star enjoyed her heyday in the sixties as the lead singer with the female trio 'The Supremes'.

If her public appearances have been rare in recent years, her record releases have been even rarer. As one quarter of the Supremes she was a member of the second biggest selling group of the sixties after the Beatles. She also starred in The Lady Sings The Blues and Mahogany. Her last appearance on the small screen came in 1994 in the Movie of the Week Out of Darkness.

DIANA ROSS GOES INTO REHAB

Diana Ross has entered a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center before she begins an international summer tour, her spokesman said.

The singer-actress voluntarily entered the Promises center in Malibu about 10 days ago "to clear up some personal issues," Paul Bloch said Thursday.

"She wants to be in great shape because she is someone who feels a sense of responsibility to her family and her fans," he said, reading from a prepared statement.

Bloch said he did not know when Ross would be released or the specific problem for which she was receiving treatment.

Ross, 58, was scheduled to begin her tour on June 26 in Germany. Bloch said the performances would not be postponed.

"She'll be touring," he said. "She'll be doing the great show she always does."

DIVA DIANA REIGNS SUPREME

Diana Ross, the original pop diva, has been in spellbinding form on her latest tour of the UK.

The last couple of years have been unkind to the Queen of Motown. There was the embarrassing spat with security at London Airport, the arrest for drunk-driving in Arizona and last week's humbling news that she has another two days to serve in a Tucson slammer.

But Ross could hardly have picked a better time to hit the road. Critics and fans alike have been blown away by 59-year-old's stellar rendition off one of the most brilliant back catalogues in pop.

"If the procession of classics could leave any jaw on the floor, there's the sobering fact that the only "show" here is Ross herself," said one music writer.

Performing the last sell out date of her UK tour at Wembley Arena, London, on Thursday night, the superstar was dressed to thrill in a succession of outrageous outfits that belie the fact that she is a mother of six about to celebrate her 60th birthday.

In a remarkable career that spans over 40 years, Diana Ross has become a pop icon.

Diana Ross (born Diane Ernestine Ross, March 26, 1944) has come a long way from being the little girl from Detroit's poor Brewster Housing Projects who wanted to become a star eventually forming the Primettes with friends Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard and Barbara Martin while still in highschool. After Martin left the group, the Primettes signed to Motown and became the Supremes.

After a decade and twelve number one hits, the Supremes (as ranked by Billboard magazine's record popularity charts) had become the third biggest pop act of the sixties, trailing only the Beatles and Elvis. It was at this point, in 1970, that Diana Ross decided to strike out on her own.

Still signed to Motown, Diana's first solo hit was 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' Over the next decade hits came thick-and-fast.

Diana Ross said at one point that one of the reasons why she left the Supremes was that she wanted to try a movie career. And so, not long after her marriage to public relations executive Robert Silberstein in 1971, she started working on 'Lady Sings The Blues' a dramatization of Billie Holiday's life.

Diana Ross had the leading role and was applauded widely by critics - both for her acting and her singing. She won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress. The soundtrack double album for the movie also did extremely well, topping the US charts for two weeks and earning a gold disc.

Diana starred in two more movies, 'Mahogany' in 1975, and 'The Wiz' in 1977 - which was an adaptation of The Wizard of Oz and starred Diana Ross as Dorothy, and Michael Jackson as the scarecrow.

In 1980 Diana's landmark solo album, aptly named 'Diana' It went platinum and contained such songs as 'Upside Down' which stayed at number one spot for four weeks and sold over a million copies, and 'I'm Coming Out'

Later that year, in a rapid early-morning session in Reno, Diana Ross and Lionel Richie record the theme song to the movie 'Endless Love' which starred Brooke Shields.

The duet topped the US charts in August, eventually selling over two million copies.

In recent years she has hit the headlines for the wrong reasons as she has battled drink and drug problems, bitterly fallen out with her fellow members of the Supremes and seen her marriage collapse. But her status as an all-time great, with a fan base to match, has never waned.

With Supremes songs having become essential classics and household favourites, 1988 saw them being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 1993 Diana was honoured by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful female singer of all time.

DIANA ROSS COLLECTS CITY OF PARIS AWARD

Last night (1st March 2005) Diana Ross was awarded the City Of Paris Award (La Medaille De Vermeil) by the Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoe.

The diva, who had been seen attending some of the shows at Paris fashion week earlier in the day, spoke about the significance of the award to her saying:

"You know, sometimes it is hard to accept such wonderful compliments I am truly like a mother first you know, and I do care about so many things. I care about so many things and so many things that are going on in the world. I want to do more, I want to help more especially for children and things that I can do to make a difference in this world and maybe this accepting an honour like this is just the beginning of some of the work that possibly I could do. There is so much need and maybe there is a way just through my voice, through some way that I could make a difference."

Because of its symbolic and artistic value, the ''City of Paris'' medal is a token of thankfulness to personalities who, somehow have displayed a postitive role in the Parisian community. It is most frequently given to personalities from the world of the arts, culture, athletes and veterans. The mayor of Paris explained why the award is given to artists such as Diana Ross:

"Paris is a city of the world. It is a cosmopolitan city and Paris should honour creation, artists and generous people of the from around the way world."

The medal design was inspired by the 12th century seal of the water merchants that was once the emblem of Paris. The medal is produced at the Mint and has been in use since 1946.

The medal is also awarded systematically to Parisians on their 100th birthday''s and to couples who celebrate their 50th wedding anniversaries. 800 of these medals are awarded annually.

"I am a survivor and you know, I know that what's important is for me to be happy and I always have to keep my focus in the right direction, which really is about my children and my family and I know what the focus should be and where my values are so I do that first and then I think about the other things."

7. SOUNDBITE John Demsey, (Global President of M-A-C Cosmetics):

"She just moved from New York, Connecticut here to Los Angeles, she has two teenage boys who are quickly approaching college age, she's very proud of her three daughters. She's decided to plant her flag out here in Los Angeles, she hasn't really lived out here - people think that she did but she didn't. She entering a new chapter in her life, she's touring again, she was the closing act on the tsunami benefit concert and it's really sort of the planets are lining up for another Supreme moment and she's back and she never left, she's back on the top of the news."

"Well it's interesting, I don't change my hair easily because I'm recognised with big hair, so Peter did the straight hair. Peter over there in the corner, did the straight hair and I was a little worried about it being the change because I don't know, I don't want to try to look like any of the young girls that are out there. I don't want to be in competition or to try to be like any of the young girls. So I didn't know if I wanted to do that or not but they seem to think that it's fresh and new and they like it."

14. SOUNDBITE John Demsey:

"She talked to us about pink, she had a very unique point of view relative to bronzing and women of colour. She was forceful, professional and had a strong point of view and that's why it's been fabulous."

15. SOUNDBITE Diana Ross:

(Q: How does it feel to be a beauty icon?)

"I don't know, it feels good Everything feels good. Once I really am....am I really a beauty icon? (Everyone shouts 'Yes!') Am I a eauty icon? ('Yes!') Well, it always feels great, all of that. I'm a survivor, you know, I'm a survivor. Life is going to throw things at you and you just got to work it out, you know, I am a survivor, that I'm proud of. And I guess I'm going to own being a diva because at first I kept saying, 'What is a diva?' So I'm going to own it, whatever it is, I'll just hold it, you know."

DIANA ROSS PUTS HER BEST FACE FORWARD

Legendary pop diva Diana Ross met with the press in Los Angeles yesterday (20th January 2005) to mark her association with M-A-C Cosmetics, who named her a "2005 Beauty Icon."

The cosmetic company have launched an extensive line of new beauty products ranging from blushes and lipsticks, eye shadows and beauty powders, all with the divas name on them.

Making a rare appearance today, at the M-A-C store, Diana Ross's demeanor was simply sunny, complemented by a lime-green Versace sundress and matching pumps. And forget the bad old days of being forced to "Call Her 'Miss Ross.'" When photographers clamored for "Diana!" Ross didn't just pose, she flitted, flirted, and even shook her derriere playfully.

The subject was makeup, but her appearance seemed to have the greater significance of a complete makeover. Ross's recent troubled, turbulent years appeared to be ancient history.

Less than a month into 2005, Diana Ross has already had a good year. Last weekend, a global audience saw her show-closing performance of "Reach Out and Touch" at the "Tsunami Aid" benefit, which raised millions for victims of the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami that pounded southern Asia. Now there's the M-A-C deal, and a slick, sleek marketing blitz to ensure it's a success.

When asked where her future lay Ross told AP Enetertainment.

"I keep asking myself that...I am a survivor. I know that what's important is for me to be happy. I always have to keep my focus in the right direction, which is really about my children." (The twice-divorced Ross has five: three adult daughters and two teen-age sons.)

John Demsey, Global President of M-A-C Cosmetics, noted:

"She's entering a new chapter in her life," , he added that Ross has recently moved from New York to Los Angeles. "The planets are lining up for another supreme moment," he continued. "She's back, (but) she never left. She's back on the top of the news."

That is, with good news.

The Ross/M-A-C association has been in the works since early 2004, when the company launched its first "Beauty Icon" items from another diva, Liza Minnelli.

"We wanted to celebrate women who had legendary style and who had made a difference both in terms of their talent, and their contribution to pop culture," Demsey said.

The company approached Ross, who says she didn't need to be sold on the idea, as she was already a longtime M-A-C customer. Five company reps met with Ross in her New York apartment, and the deal was sealed. The devil was in the details, admits Demsey, who says there were numerous discussions about just what would go into the line. "She has a strong vision of what she wants, in terms of the product and how she likes to look and the image she likes to portray," Demsey says. "Her professional is legendary, but that's why we hired her. We expected nothing less."

For example: "She talked to us about pink. She had a very unique point of view relative to bronzing for women of colour. She was forceful, professional and had a strong point of view. That's why it's been fabulous."

The product line is not just for African-American customers, says Ross. "I think it's for every woman. All different kind of women. And even some men who wear makeup."

And on how it felt to be a fashion icon "It feels good, everything feels good" Ross bubbled. "Am I a beauty icon?" she asked, turning to the swarm of photographers, who replied with a half-hearted, "Yes."

"AM I a beauty icon?!" Ross asked again, more boldly.

"YES!" they cheered, and then applauded.

No doubt about it: Diana Ross is back, feeling nothing short of supreme.
