Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles have made their first public appearance together - at last giving Britain''s photographers the picture they''ve been seeking for years.

The two had arrived separately at the Ritz Hotel in central London for the 50th birthday party of Parker Bowles'' sister Annabel Elliott - after days of speculation that this would be the night they went public as a couple.

The romance is now out in the open.

Camilla Parker-Bowles and Prince Charles had visited each other''s homes, met each other''s children, and even issued a news release together.

But until Thursday night, they had eluded the cameras, arriving and departing separately at social events.

Photographers were determined to get a picture of them as a couple.

Masses of photographers, many of whom had staked out their positions the day before, waited eagerly across the road from the steps of the Ritz hotel.

Just before midnight, the prince and Parker Bowles walked down the stairs together.

They hesitated briefly at the curb as their car pulled up.

There was no posing for the cameras, and no comment.

But even so, photographers said they were glad to have been there.

SOUNDBITE: (English)

"Everyone has been expecting this picture for about a year now and we thought it would be on his birthday but it wasn''t and people thought it would be at Prince Edward''s wedding later this summer and it''s turned out to be now and it''s been worth the wait."

SUPER CAPTION: John Stillwell, Royal Photographer, Press Association

Royal watchers pronounced the eventual joint appearance of the Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles as unsurprising - but highly significant.

SOUNDBITE: (English)

"Q.How important is this picture?

A. This picture is very important. I mean it''s a picture I''m looking forward to having in my collection even if I sell it or not. It''s great just to be part of what''s going on here and know that you were here on that particular night and know that in five, ten fifteen years time people are going to say, ''Do you have that picture and I''m going to say yeah, so it''s important to be here tonight."

SUPER CAPTION: Richard Young, Celebrity Photographer

Many also saw it as a turning point for the media.

SOUNDBITE: (English)

"I don''t think they are going to be so furtive and look everywhere they go, every time they go and visit friends - and wonder who''s hiding in the bushes - so I think the pressure is off there and of course the pressure is off us a bit, off us a bit. So now at least it''s out and we just have to wait and see. Maybe she''ll turn up at the Polo, maybe she''ll turn up at the wedding. Who knows? We''ll just have to wait and see."

SUPER CAPTION: Arthur Edwards, Royal Photographer, The Sun Newspaper

The very public appearance together of the Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles has effectively ruined the chance of a huge payday for any enterprising freelance photographer.

SOUNDBITE: (English)

"And also now it''s a good time in his public calender, it''s a quiet time, the polls are beginning to look up and I think that generally he thought this was the right time for them to appear together.

Q. How much involvement did he actually have in it?

A. Everything, I''m told that he planned this himself. It was his idea, he decided enough was enough. They were fed up with sneaking around and tonight was the night. Q. Do you think he was worried about the amount of media attention. I guess that would be the case wherever he goes.

A. Well one thing they were extremely anxious about, in fact we were told they were sickened about the thought that some photographer was going to make a lot of money out of a single picture of them. We were told up 2 (m) million pounds could be made of an exclusive picture of Camilla and Charles together - the first ever picture. This was a way to organise it so that all photographers had a chance at that picture and of course by doing this tonight in a carefully planned event , it means that any other picture now is going to be seriously devalued."

SUPER CAPTION: Jane Kerr, Mirror Newspaper Royal Correspondent

In the year following Charles'' 1996 divorce from Princess Diana, he and Parker Bowles seemed to be making efforts to improve Parker Bowles'' public image.

Diana''s death in August 1997 halted that.

But in the past year, there have been signs of growing acceptance from the British public that the prince and Parker Bowles are a couple.

The impeachment of U-S President BILL CLINTON has looked more like theatre than real life at times over the last few months. Now a theatre company in Los Angeles has turned the story of the affair between Clinton and Monica Lewinsky into a musical.

"STARR STRUCK:A MUSICAL INVESTIGATION" opened in Hollywood on Thursday (11/2/99).

Picture the scene - the oval office where MONICA LEWINSKY and Bill Clinton are in the throes of a torrid love affair. Not, you might think, ideal material for a musical. But one theatre group in Hollywood disagrees.

"STARR STRUCK: A MUSICAL INVESTIGATION", the title is a pun based around the name of the independent counsel who led the investigation into Bill Clinton, Kenneth Starr, opened there on Thursday. The cast perform over thirty songs in the course of the play.

TRICIA LEIGH FISHER, who plays Lewinsky, says the real life events surrounding the affair have been so bizarre it didn''t take much to turn them into a musical.

"It''s just so, it''s so out there and so ridiculous. So we take it even further and just make a big dance number about all of these different things that are going on."says Tricia.

-

The play is based upon various testimonies given during the course of Starr''s investigation. At one point it shows Lewinsky delivering pizza to Clinton, as she has described doing. MICHAEL HALPIN plays the beleaguered president.

"They''re going to love it. It''s just witty enough, just silly enough, just raunchy enough, it''s going to appeal to a lot of people." said Miichael Halpin, ".

Meanwhile "Starr Struck" will carry in until the end of February.

n the seventies - he was the Playboy having the most fun. In the eighties, his bunny world was busted. But in the nineties, HUGH HEFNER has regained his crown as the Party host du jour. After several years in the wilderness, Hefner''s Playboy Mansion is once again back in vogue. His is the invitation Hollywood''s A-list craves. This month, The New York Times announced: ''The Playboy Mansion is once again a hip party spot''.

When Hefner threw a party for his 72nd birthday, it attracted a roll-call of Hollywood elite - including Cameron Diaz, Courtney Love, Leonardo DiCaprio, James Caan and Jack Nicholson. As expected, the usual bevy of bouncing blondes was in tow.

The mansion itself boasts the usual mixture of crass and class. An ultimately Hollywood concoction of 20th century, Victoriana and Jacobean. A brass plate reading ''Si Non Oscillas Noli Tintinnare'' meaning ''If you don''t swing, don''t ring'' is attached over the front door. Few 72 year olds would dare to host a ''Do you think I''m sexy?'' party - a even less would expect anyone to attend. ''It''s very nice to still be a babe magnet in your seventies'' says Hefner.

What a turnaround for a man who, 14 years ago, Newsweek announced: ''The Party''s Over''. In 1985, Hefner was under attack from the moral majority, the feminist movement and even readers of Playboy magazine. Now, his company''s shares are doing well, the casino business is expanding and Hugh no longer has a wife - but has three girlfriends on the go - Sandy, Brande and Mandy. The magazine now attracts the likes of Cindy Crawford, Pamela Anderson - and some of the biggest names in the business who are tempted to bare all.

Brought up in a strict home, Hefner was just an average guy until he launched his own mega-million publishing company in 1953 with one of the most groundbreaking and controversial magazines in history. It became the bedrock for a whole Playboy lifestyle - embraced in no small measure by the proprieter himself. Hefner quickly gained a reputation for fast-living and non-stop partying. He was usually found in pyjamas - claiming that in the early days he worked round the clock getting the magazine out so he didn''t bother getting dressed. Now, he rarely bothers to change at all.

The sacked drummer of OASIS emerged from a London court earlier today, March 2, victorious in his court battle with the brothers Gallagher.

A delighted TONY MCCARROLL left the High Court today after a last minute settlement thrashed out with lawyers representing his former pop pals.

McCarroll was kicked out of the group in 1995 and was seeking 20 per cent of the group''s annual earnings.

LIAM and NOEL GALLAGHER had been expected to attend court today to contest the action. In the end however they did not turn up and instead their legal team reached a settlement with McCarroll.

What had promised to be one of the most sensation pop music trials in years ended after just a few minutes in the High Court.

The drummer played on the group''s first album, DEFINITELY MAYBE, and on the number one single SOME MIGHT SAY from their second album. But he was sacked because the other members didn''t like him and claimed he was not a good enough drummer.

When he found out his place was being taken by ANDY WHITE, McCarroll contacted pop industry solicitor JENS HILLS, the man who secured a million dollar payoff for PETE BEST, the drummer sacked from THE BEATLES before they became famous.

McCarroll''s lawyers refused to comment on rumours that McCarroll''s claim was worth upwards of 10 million UK pounds.

But a clearly delighted McCarroll left court saying he was off to celebrate.

POSH PROVIDES NEW ADDITION TO SPICE LINE UP

POSH SPICE has become the second SPICE GIRL to deliver a new Spice baby in less than a fortnight. Infant boy BROOKLYN JOSEPH was born at a London hospital on Thursday, March 4. He weighed seven pounds.

Happy dad, British football star DAVID BECKHAM, announced the news to the world, saying mother and child were doing fine. Posh Spice Victoria Adams gave birth at Portland Hospital for Women and Children in central London.

-

Beckham told the waiting press that baby boy Brooklyn Joseph and mum Victoria were very well.

A spokeswoman for the band said the couple had chosen the name Brooklyn Joseph because Adams discovered she was pregnant while in New York on a Spice Girls tour.

As news of the birth spread, a small group of Spice Girls and Beckham fans gathered outside the hospital hoping for a glimpse of the stars. Twenty-four-year old Adams is the second member of the all-girl group to give birth. "Scary Spice" Melanie G - known as Mel B before her marriage to dancer Jimmy Gulzar - gave birth to daughter Phoenix Chi 13 days ago.

Adams and Beckhams'' relationship is a showbiz match made in heaven - for the media if not for the thousands of adoring fans of Posh Spice and "Becks".

-

The Manchester United star proposed to his Spice Girl on Saturday January 24 last year, at the Rookery Hall Hotel in Nantwich, Cheshire.

They announced it to the world at a photocall the following day, proudly showing off their glamorous rings.

"Baby Spice" Emma Bunton and ''Sporty Spice'' had already visited the proud new parents.

STAR WARS HYPE REACHES FEVER PITCH

The world got its first glimpse on Wednesday of the new trailer for the first of the `Star Wars'' prequels - `Episode One: The Phantom Menace''. And while it didn''t cause as much of a stir as the first trailer issued late last year, sci-fi die-hards wasted no time in catching the promo when it was broadcast on the top American showbiz programme "Entertainment Tonight".

-

The show''s exclusive broadcast is the latest stage in a campaign by LucasFilm and 20th Century Fox which has re-drawn the boundaries of film marketing. So keen is public anticipation in the film that the studio now has the luxury of picking and choosing a handful of outlets for its advertising in the knowledge that fans will come flocking, and word of mouth will spread quickly.

-

The first trailer - premiered in America on November 17 last year - sent Star Wars fans shelling out nine dollars for the privilege of watching 125 seconds of film at 75 specially selected cinemas in the US and Canada. Notices posted on the official Star Wars web site had tipped off fans, offering them the chance to see it a full three calendar days before the rest of the country. At one LA cinema, 500 people paid for a lunchtime showing of Denzel Washington''s The Siege. By the time the film had started, more than 300 people had already left.

-

So controlling has the campaign become that even the merchandising campaign has become an extended tease. In January, LucasFilm unveiled only one Phantom Menace action figure - a central aspect of Star Wars culture - to hordes of eagerly expectant fans. The Battle Droid can be seen in the trailer zipping through a forest blasting its lasers.

-

The Star Wars hype machine is also rekindling interest in clubs and conventions based on the billion-dollar franchise. In London this week, fans gathered for an exhibition of Star Wars cards and toys. Special guests included KENNY BAKER, who reprises his role as the vertically challenged robot R2D2 in the new film. With only a few beeps and wobbles to perform in front of a blue screen, he''s as much in the dark as the public as to what happens in the new film.

Because the movie tells the story of young Anakin Skywalker - a fallen Jedi knight who later becomes Darth Vader - DAVID PROWSE, who played Darth Vader in the first three films, won''t be appearing this time round. However he told APTN that he would like to play Darth if he appears in the next two prequels.

-

Unlike Alec Guinness, who shrewdly negotiated a profit-sharing arrangement before the first Star Wars film was made, neither Prowse nor Baker have benefitted financially from the huge success of the Star Wars franchise.

-

Episode One: The Phantom Menace, opens Stateside at the end of May and internationally from the beginning of June.

MICHAEL JACKSON launched his bid to celebrate the Millennium Tuesday (23/03) when he revealed details of a special concert. Joined by his old pal, PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA, the gloved one said he wanted to announce the event in South Africa which he described as ''the cradle of civilisation'' .

The pop star hopes to raise millions for charity, including the Nelson Mandela Children''s Fund, when he stages two concerts later this year in Munich and Seoul.

Jackson announced this after a meeting with President Nelson Mandela at the presidential residence, Genadendal today.

Jackson said Mandela was his inspiration and he wanted to do something for him before the end of the century. He said he would invite some of his friends to join him at either one or both concerts scheduled in Seoul, South Korea on June 25, and Munich, Germany, two days later.

They would include Boyz II Men, Stevie Wonder, Luciano Pavarotti, and hopefully others that had yet to be lined up.

Jackson said he had spoken to Mandela earlier in the year, at which time they had discussed the "concept of giving".

His new song "What more can I give?" would be dedicated to the Nelson Mandela Children''s Fund. The money raised would be donated to the Nelson Mandela Children''s Fund, the International Red Cross and the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

Jackson declined to answer questions. Asked how much he hoped to raise, his spokesman said they would be asking people to give "and however much they can give is how much we can give".

Hollywood''s glitterati came out in force to attend the premiere of "THE MATRIX", the latest thriller from brothers, ANDY and LARRY WACHOWSKI. Cast-members, KEANU REEVES, JOE PANTOLIANO and CARRIE-ANNE MOSS were joined by "Friends" star, MATTHEW PERRY, former ER hunk, GEORGE CLOONEY, "Ever After" star, DREW BARRYMORE and the man who can do no wrong, WILL SMITH and his actress wife, JADA PINKETT.

After striking cult film status with their lesbian thriller, "BOUND" three years ago, the Wachowski''s ensured the backing of Hollywood heavyweight producer, JOEL SILVER for this high-profile, star-driven cyber-punk, martial arts feature.

The story revolves around Thomas "Neo" Anderson, (played by Reeves), a computer hacker in the 22nd century whose everyday life is turned upside down when he discovers that the world around him is an intricate virtual dream created by computers and scientists from the future. When Neo realizes that the machines keep their human slaves passive by literally plugging them into a virtual-reality universe that appears as the 20th century world we know, he teams up with Morpheus (LAURENCE FISHBURNE) and his band of freedom fighters to reclaim their individuality and to free humanity from the torture. Carrie-Anne Moss plays Trinity, Neo''s love interest.

No stranger to mind-bending futurism, Silver - whose producing credits include "Predator" and "Demolition Man", alongside the massively successful "Lethal Weapon" films - was immediately taken with the brothers'' script.

"We began with the premise that every single thing we believe in today and every single physical item is actually a total fabrication created by an electronic universe", explain Larry and Andy. "Once you start dealing with an electronic reality, you can really push the boundaries of what might be humanly possible. So if characters in ''The Matrix'' can have instantaneous information downloaded into their heads, they should, for example, be able to be as good a kung fu master as Jackie Chan".

This idea offered the Wachowski brothers an opportunity to work in another area of their particular interest-the fight choreography seen in Hong Kong action films. The cast trained withYUEN WO PING (one of Hong Kong''s top stunt specialists in both kung fu and wire-stunt work) for three months in L.A. before moving the film''s location in Sydney, Australia where they spent two months shooting on Sydney''s streets, rooftops and in warehouses.

Reeves, who is best-known for his role in "Speed" has also starred in "Bram Stoker''s Dracula", "My Own Private Idaho" and more recently "The Devil''s Advocate" and "Last Time I Committed Suicide".

Fishburne most recently appeared in "Hoodlum" and "Event Horizon".

Carrie-Anne Moss appeared regularly in the television series, "Dark Justice" and "Due South" and her film credits include "Sabotage" and "The Secret Life Of Algernon".

JOE PANTOLIANO (who stars as Cypher) recently starred with Wesley Snipes and Tommy Lee Jones in "U.S. Marshals", reprising the role of Cosmo Renfro that he played in the thriller, "The Fugitive". He also starred alongside JENNIFER TILLEY and GINA GERSHON in "Bound".
