Jordan - 24 December 1968 and File

Black and White

An important new factor has emerged in the Middle East - the Palestinian guerrilla movement. Their increasingly effective raids have spurred Israel into

stronger reprisals, thus bringing nearer the danger of an escalation of the conflict into yet another full-scale war. This report, which shows the fierce - even brutal - realism of the guerrillas' training programmes. One man died as the Roving Report team was filming. We spoke to Yehia Hammouda, the new head of the Palestine Liberation Organization and, finally, to Jordan's ruler, King Hussein.

Gaza Strip - 8 June 1970 and File

Sound: Commentary

Three years ago , the Israelis' sweeping victory in the so-called "Six Days War" took them into neighbouring Arab lands which they have occupied ever since. One of those areas is the Gaza Strip. Nowhere else in the occupied territories has opposition to Israel's rule been more determined. More than half the 350,000 population are refugees, many of them victims of the 1948 hostilities that followed Israel's creation. The strip is grossly overpopulated, with 25,000 inhabitants per square mile. Israel would like to move some out, and is already encouraging thousands of them to travel daily to Israel for work. Those Arabs who do so run the risk of grenades or bullets from their fellow-countrymen who see all forms of co-operation with the Israelis as treachery. In this report, we see the workers boarding their trucks for Israel, visit one of the Strip's eight refugee camps, and talk to Colonel Shmuel Liran, an Israeli military spokesman.

Jordan - 30 September 1970 and File

On September 16th 1970 King Hussein of Jordan handed over his disintegrating country to the army. The following day saw the outbreak of civil war and the start of a battle which lasted more than a week. Our camera crew, caught in the cross-fire at Amman's Intercontinental Hotel, recorded the battle for the capital and the plight of more than 200 people, mostly journalists, marooned with them and running short of food and water. In the north, Hussein's troops battled with the guerrillas and Syrians for control of Irbid and Ramtha.

Scenes shot from the Intercontinental Hotel in Amman during the first five days' fighting,

Tanks and armoured cars moving in the streets. Shots from the balcony of the hotel looking out over the city as reporter describes the scene.

Smoke rising from wrecked buildings and fuel depots.

Jordanian tanks and troops in the north with Irbid and Ramtha in the distance.

Jordan - 14 October 1970 and File

Black and White

The civil war in Jordan in September 1970 gave rise to some of the bloodiest fighting the Middle East has seen. The battle between the Palestinian commandos and the Jordanian Army lasted less than a fortnight, but at the end of it whole areas of Amman, Irbid and other main towns lay in ruins. The Palestinians claimed 20,000 had died in the fighting, but the Jordanian Government estimated the true figure at 700 dead and about 1500 injured.
