Seoul Is Lost Again

On December 27, 1950 General Matthew Ridgway arrives in Korea to replace Field Commander General Walker, who has been killed in an accident. The greatly expanded enemy forces mount a New Year's Eve offensive that drives UN troops from Seoul. South Korea's capital city again falls to the Communists.

"Operation Killer" Is Launched

General Ridgway institutes a strategy using a series of short high-powered thrusts by the 8th Army aimed at eliminating the enemy's now enormous numerical advantage. Dubbed "Operation Killer" it pounds assaults at the enemy and achieves a kill ratio of as much as 10-1. On March 15, 1951 the Allied forces re-enter Seoul, and two weeks later Americans push across the 38th parallel.

Korean Winter Sets In

In November, the snow and freezing temperatures of the harsh Korean winter intensify the hardships of the troops. Ships in the northern Sea of Japan pitch and toss as icy winds sweep their decks. UN troops at outposts along the Yalu endure bitter conditions, and a turkey dinner dropping to them by parachute on Thanksgiving Eve is gratefully received.

Three battalions, English and Scottish, are transferred from duty in Hong Kong just in time to assist in the defense of Pusan, encircled by Red troops. Planes are sent from carriers in the Sea of Japan to bomb Communist supply lines. There is heavy fighting, but the enemy is held off.

UN Invasion At Inchon

In a daring end run on September 15th, UN forces launch a surprise amphibious assault 150 miles behind enemy lines. A navy barrage clears the way for a Marine landing, complete with tanks and heavy artillery, and Inchon is captured.

Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) Is Established

The armistice establishes a Demilitarized Zone, a 2 1/2 mile wide buffer zone between North and South Korea from which troops of both sides are withdrawn. The line gives South Korea about 1.500 square miles more territory than before war. "Operation Big Switch" begins August 5, 1953 - 13.000 UN prisoners are returned, mostly South Korean and American.

Peace Talks Resume At Panmunjom

On October 25, 1951 cease-fire talks begin again. The war goes into low gear. The talks become deadlocked again, this time over UN insistence on voluntary repatriation of prisoners. The truce deadline passes without agreement, and by the end of the year the war is on again in full force.

Bloody Hill Battles Inflict Heavy Losses

Throughout 1952 some of the bitterest ground fighting of the war takes place in the rugged hills and ridges around the 38th parallel. The hills change hands constantly and the battles for them are many: Heartbreak Ridge - Bunker Hill - Bloody Ridge - T-Bone - The Hook - Sniper Ridge - The Punchbowl - Luke's Castle - Old Baldy. Wooded slopes are laid bare, pitted beyond belief. Opposing trench lines face each other much as in 1914. It is costly in human lives. And it is a stalemate.

North Korea's Capital Taken By Allies

UN forces continue to advance in the north, taking Kaesong and Wonsan. Psychological warfare aids in the capture of Pyongyang, the Red capital, in mid-October. A massive airdrop aimed at cutting off Red forces retreating from Pyongyang employs nearly 4.000 paratroopers, but the enemy has fled north.

UN Forces Drive Toward Yalu

R.O.K. troops sweep 3.000 enemy mines from the beaches to clear the way for a Navy task force to land a Marine division at Wonsan. The Marines move swiftly toward the Yalu River, liberating villages held by the Reds. A massive naval operation lands 7.000 men and equipment of the 7th Division at Iwan, 100 miles closer to the Yalu.

"Operation Little Switch"

After Stalin dies in March of 1953, Malenkov comes to power and launches his "peace offensive" worldwide. In April, 1953 Supreme Commander Mark Clark's proposal to exchange sick and wounded prisoners is agreed to by the Chinese and Korean Communists, and truce talks resume.

Armistice Is Signed

The truce talks that started in 1951 finally end on July 27, 1953. The Allies win their demand that no anti-Communist prisoners are to be forced to return to Communist domination against their will. The armistice is signed by General Clark, North Korean Premier Kim Il Sun and Chinese Communist General Peng Teh-huai.
