STORYLINE

Thousands of children in the Gaza Strip on Thursday attempted to set a new world record by flying colourful homemade kites amid the ruins of Israel's bruising offensive earlier this year.

The rare display of joy in the isolated seaside territory brought some six-thousand kids, some wearing orange T-shirts and blue caps, to a beach in the Jebaliya area in Gaza's war-torn north.

There, the children released their kites, which included designs such as the red, green, black and white Palestinian flag, into clear skies.

"We want to take the sadness away from us after the war," said Aya Khrees, one of the young participants in Thursday's event, which was sponsored by the United Nations, .

John Ging, who heads the UN agency that deals with Palestinian refugees, said the fact that the event was taking place in Gaza held special significance.

"We're smashing the record here in Gaza, which of course is an expression of the demand for liberty from these children," the UNRWA in Gaza chief said.

The Guinness Book of World Records said it had received an application from Gaza for "the most kites flown simultaneously" but that it was unable to send a judge to the event due to travel restrictions into Gaza imposed by the Israeli blockade of the coastal strip.

However, the children would be able to break the record even without a judge by verifying the accomplishment in other ways, a Guinness spokeswoman said.

UNWRA officials said every child at the event had their kite registered in accordance with Guinness protocol, which they said event organisers followed with "military precision".

The current record for simultaneous kite flying stands at 967, set less than a year ago in Melle-Gronegau, Germany.

The UN agency said it believed the children smashed that record but would release its final tally on Saturday.

STORYLINE:

A Vietnamese bubble artist, who holds multiple records, succeeded in both breaking and creating a new record Tuesday in New York City.

Previously, Fan Yang claimed 12 other Guinness World Records for various bubble stunts.

This attempt, his 13th, created a bubble with 13 chambers and large enough to hold 34 people inside, the only known record attempt for a bubble so large and one holding so many people.

Guinness allowed Yang one trial run and three attempts for his record.

Yang broke and created the record on his second attempt.

"I did on the second because the second attempt the bubble last longer. From my side I saw that the entire system was intact, so there was no where gap. So the second attempt is the official record. Yeah, and this will be sent into the Guinness World Record for approval," said Yang.

The bubble when completed had a total surface are of 1,076 feet, to obtain those dimensions Yang had to come up with a special ratio of soap to water.

"I actually have twelve different kinds of bubble mixture to create bubble tricks and elements. They are based by their viscosity and density. Some of them are more elastic, some of them are more light, so depends on what I'm doing," said Yang.

Yang's attempt was captured on video tape and watched by Guinness World Record observers.

It becomes official once proof of the attempt is sent to Guinness World Record staff for approval.

LEAD IN:

There are all sorts of odd categories in the Guinness Book of Records. And this week, the organisers added another.

The residents of Chongqing, which lies 1600 kilometres (994 miles) inland from Shanghai on China's Yangtze River, tucked into a huge banquet of intestines, bowels, and some vegetables, all fried in spicy oil laced with chillies.

Now this city hopes to lay claim to the record for holding the largest Hot Pot Party in the World.

STORYLINE:

Tradition deems that in China commercial celebrations - be they shop openings or a trade fair - are heralded by troupes of brightly dressed, middle aged, female percussionists.

And in Chongqing this week, the din was near deafening.

This is because the city held the world's largest Chongqing Hot Pot party - a street "food orgy" - where the dishes of delight included all kinds of innards, boiled in a mouth-numbing spicy peppered soup.

In Chongqing, the local dish is believed to render medicinal qualities

He Yongzh, President Chongqing Hot Pot Association, says that the spicy Hot Pot is said to have a lot in common with the temperament of the local people.

She says the city wants the whole world to learn about their favourite dish.

Chongqing Hot Pot can include lotus root, seaweed, bean sprouts, strips of beef, chicken feet, ox bowels and an array of intestinal tracts.

These are cooked in a spicy soup - and the Chongqing folk lap it up.

This is more than eating - this is a lifestyle choice and social activity.

Behind the scenes, chefs prepare trays of ingredients for the crowds.

This is clearly not for the squeamish.

But the guts and bowels provide the foundations for a substantial industry.

Greater Chongqing - which covers a land mass equivalent to Austria with a population of 32 million.

Qin Wenwu, Director, Chongqing Municipality Commercial Committee says the area has 50,000 Hot Pot restaurants which employ over 400,000 people.

Chongqing Hot Pot is often described as this city's calling card - you should never leave here without one .

This evening, however, is more than a feast - it's an official Guinness World Record attempt - albeit the first attempt in the new category of "largest Hot Pot party in the world".

The judges deemed that at least 2,000 should be actively participating in the banquet at one time and that a minimum of 250 Hot Pots should be bubbling away.

Of the tens of thousands who gathered, the official count is 13,612 eating together around 2,249 Hot Pots.

They spread along two kilometres (1.2 miles) of street and sidewalk - spending over US$ 400,000 as they munched their way through 30 tonnes of tripe and hopefully into the history books.

++++PLEASE NOTE : at time of publication no official confirmation has been released that this attempt has got into the Guinness World Records.

RECORD WITH A STING IN ITS TAIL

A Thai woman has completed a 32-day record-breaking attempt to stay in a room filled with 3400 poisonous scorpions.

Kanchana Ketkeaw emerged on Wednesday from the 12 square-metre (130-square-foot) glass room in a department store in the Thai beach resort of Pattaya, setting an unofficial world record.

The 30-year-old Thai performance artist has worked with scorpions daily as a tourist attraction - putting them in her mouth as part of the routine - and has been stung hundreds of times.

Kanchana was bitten nine times during the attempt but says the venom has little effect on her because of the immunity she has built up over seven years.

The previous world record was set last year by a Malaysian woman who endured 30 days with 2700 scorpions.

She was stung seven times, fell unconscious and almost gave up the attempt.

Final approval of the record will be sought from the Guinness Book of World Records office in London.

Thai/Nat

What's got a wet nose and fits in a drinking glass ?

Answer; the world's lightest dog.

A breeder in Bangkok is claiming that when it comes to pocket-sized pooches, nobody measures up to his Yorkshire terrier, "Buddy".

He doesn't so much tip the scales, but nudge them gently.

One year old Buddy's weight of 475 grams has undercut the previous world record by six grammes.

That makes him the world's lightest dog.

And he's one of the shortest as well.

According to the Thai vet who officiated, Buddy measures just 11.5 centimetres from head to paw.

His owner is a former professor of economics.

So he knows a thing or two about down sizing.

And when it comes to breeding mini-mutts he's certainly consistent.

To prove it, Buddy's sister Darika was there too.

She also broke the old weight record.

By a single gramme.

And what's the secret of this dainty duo ?

Perhaps the fact that the previous record-holder, called "Big Boss", was their father.

As to diet and other factors, their owner is keeping all that to himself.

Although he believes that he's performing a service to mankind by teaching us to think small and conserve, rather than consume the world's resources.

He also thinks he's found the solution to saving the endangered species of the world.

SOUNDBITE: (Thai)

"People worry about the extinction of big animals, like elephants. If they were smaller we could save them. I've proved it's possible with my dogs."

SUPER CAPTION: Chai Kanchanakom, Dog breeder

Buddy's record has yet to be officially recognized.

The claim will be sent to judges from the Guinness Book Of Records.

But as far as Mr Kanchanakom is concerned, it's time to get Buddy looking his best, as befits his new and unaccustomed stature in the canine world.

WORLD'S BIGGEST CRAYFISH PARTY

Every year 14,000 people meet to eat 40,000 cray-fish, washed down with plenty of the local Swedish schnapps and accompanied by a great deal of enthusiastic singing and violin playing.

Held on the 3rd August in Malmo, Sweden, the event is confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records as the World's Biggest Crayfish Party.

The Viking-style party attracts people from all of Sweden and across from Denmark.

It is one of the craziest parties in the year with prizes of schnapps awarded for the funniest hats.

The shellfish eating, washed down with copious glasses of the potent local schnapps, is traditionally combined with much hearty singing.

One of the hits among the Swedish drinking songs is "tu la hej tu la haj" - It basically means - that the one who does not sing along - does not drink !

The revellery goes on for the whole weekend - replicating the feasts of the old Viking times.
