Relatives of those who died in the Sewol ferry disaster attended a memorial service on Wednesday at Paengmok Port in Jindo, close to the site where the ferry went down.
Thursday marks the first anniversary of the sinking in which 304 were killed in waters off the southwestern coast of South Korea, many of them high school students.
Among the 476 passengers only 172 survived and the bodies of nine of the victims are still missing.
A model of the sunken ferry was carried on stage during the service, adorned with yellow ribbons with messages wishing farewell to those who died.
A traditional Korean shamanism performance also took place to mourn the victims and to send them to good places in their afterlife.
Korean shamanism has deep roots in folk beliefs from ancient times.
During the service, relatives of victims still missing also insisted the government expedite the ship salvage process so that the remains of their love ones can finally be recovered.
