"In the US market, we saw hybrid penetration in 2008 at 2.4 percent of the market and in 2009 it was 2.7 percent. Three-tenths of a percent of gain. Ninety-seven percent of people are picking something else. So this idea that we are all moving towards hybrids is not supported by numbers and if you take out the Prius, that share drops by half so its about one and a half percent points of share."

LEADIN :
The Geneva Motor Show is currently underway amid difficult times for the motor industry and car giant Toyota in particular.
For most automakers the show is about rolling out new models despite falling consumer demand, and trying to get back to business as usual.
The Geneva show boasts 32 world premiere production cars and a dozen concept cars.
Toyota faces an uphill struggle to convince consumers that it is innovating and getting a grip on the quality and safety issues that have recently tarnished its reputation.
But the industry is still going through tough times, and the emphasis at this year''s show will be on "recovery," according to Auto Analyst with IHS-Global Insight Rebecca Lindland.
"We are coming out of a terrible 2009, in most parts of the world, some of the largest markets, like Western Europe and the US, really struggled throughout 2009, so 2010 is about getting back on track," she says.
Sales in the United States dipped to 10.4 (m) million last year, well below the 16 (m) million rate that held for the earlier part of the decade, as China replaced it as the world''s largest single-country auto market with sales surging 45 percent to 13.6 (m) million.
Collectively, European sales were down 1.6 percent to 14.5 (m) million, helped from an even steeper slide by government cash-for-clunker incentives that have already ended in countries like Italy and Germany and are being phased out in France.
In Europe, sales are expected to dip by 2 (m) million vehicles this year as cash-for-clunkers programmes expire.
There are plenty of luxury cars on display to keep up the glitz and glamour on the show''s eightieth anniversary.
Leading the pack is what may be the most expensive of all the cars at the show.
It is a bespoke Bugatti Grand Sport, already sold for 1.75 million EUROS (2.4m US Dollars) excluding tax to a private buyer.
The vehicle boasts a carbon body and state of the art features.
Bugatti would not reveal the identity of the buyer, but would only say they paid an additional 350,000 EUROS (480,000 US Dollars) to have it customised.
Alasdair Stewart, Director of Marketing Sales and After Sales, Bugatti Automobiles says:
"This is a highly individualised car. Our standard car costs 1.4 million EUROS (1.9m US Dollars) excluding tax. This one, costs 1.75 million EUROS (2.4m US Dollars) excluding tax. The difference here is many individualised features. It is completely made of carbon so you have complete visible carbon here. We have unique wheels on the car. We have a very special interior, a very special leather that has gone into the interior. We have a very special console in the middle of the car. We have got some painted air intakes at the back here as well."
By comparison, the newly unveiled Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera appears almost affordable for those with expensive tastes.
It has a retail cost of 175,200 EUROS (240,000 US Dollars) excluding tax.
It is lighter than its predecessors and goes from zero to 200 kilometres (124.27 miles) in 10.2 seconds.
For those seeking classic refinement, Rolls Royce recently unveiled the Ghost, a more sporty version of their Phantom which will retail for 213,000 EUROS ($300, 000 approx) without tax.
It has a twelve cylinder, twin turbo charged engine, and an eight speed transmission. The engine produces way over five hundred horse power, that allows it to accelerate from nought to sixty (96.56 kms) in 4.8 seconds.
Tom Purves, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars says:
"It is extremely sporty and agile, although we describe the sportiness as waftability (meant to mean quiet perfection) because a Rolls Royce is all about refinement."
Rebecca Lindland, an automobile analyst with IHS Global Insight, explains why the luxury car market has not been hit by the economic crisis.
"Once you are in luxury, it is very hard to give it up." she says.
The colour of this new Ferrari 599 HY-KERS tells you something about its engine.
Green luxury cars are the star attraction at Geneva this year.
Now lovers of speed can enjoy high performance vehicles and keep their eco - credientials intact.
Ferrari unveiled its gleaming 599 HY-KERS. According to the company''s head of innovation, Ferdinando Cannizzo, even Ferrari are doing their bit for the environment.
"Basically the aim of this project is to keep the characteristic of our cars, so sportiness and fun to drive and so on, but adding an efficiency system that allows us to reduce the fuel consumption," he says.
Toyota offers up the Airus, a post-Prius hybrid that will go on sale in Europe in just a few months.
However Lindland questions the popularity of hybrids.
"In the US market, we saw hybrid penetration in 2008 at 2.4 percent of the market and in 2009 it was 2.7 percent. Three-tenths of a percent of gain. Ninety-seven percent of people are picking something else. So this idea that we are all moving towards hybrids is not supported by numbers and if you take out the Prius, that share drops by half so its about one and a half percent points of share," she says.
Protoscar, a small Swiss engineering company, is attracting visitors to its Lampo2, a fully electric concept car currently in design that can be charged for a range of 100 kilometres (62.13 miles) in just ten minutes.
The futuristic looking Italian designed Giugiaro Quaranta, was showcased in the exhibition''s ''Green Pavillion''. It''s opaque roof is made up of solar panels, which run the interior electronics and charge the batteries.
The Geneva Motor Show runs until March 14.
