The United States launched the rocket whose one-and-a-half million pounds of thrust is designed to carry aloft the Apollo capsule bearing a man to the moon within the next few years. The mighty Saturn, 16 stories in heighk is launched from Cape Kennedy and for the first time in the space race the United States has surpassed Russia. The rocket and payload total 562 tons and the 20.000 pound that is put into orbit is, by far, the heaviest space vehicle ever launched successfully.

Five hours after the House votes on the measure, President Johnson signs in into law before an audience of legislators and Civil Rights leaders at the White House. He calls it "a turning point in history" and uses a hundred pens to affix his signature. Following tradition the pens are distributed by the President to government leaders and other notables present including the Reverend Martin Luther King, Attorney General Robert Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey and Everett Dirksen.

A crisis develops as two American ships, the Maddox and the C. Turner Joy, are attacked without provocation by Communist PT-Boats while patrolling international waters in the Gulf of Tonkin off North Vietnam. The U.S. declares it an unwarranted act of aggression and retaliates by sending war planes from two carriers on 64 sorties against North Vietnamese PT bases, damaging 25 of their boats as well as their oil reserves. U.S. military advisers in South Vietnam already number 21.000; now the forces will be increased still further, along with air support. President Johnson speaks to the nation to announce U.S. action. he reaffirms commitment to the people of South Vietnam while stating "we seek no wider war". Ambassador Adlai Stevenson reports the North Vietnamese attacks to the United Nations and reiterates the U.S. position expressed by the President.

Sixty-eight million people go to the polls to choose the man who will lead them during the next four year. Mr. Johnson receives more than 61 % of the popular vote and 486 electoral votes versus Senator Goldwater's 52. It is an election that has political scientists wondering. Party lines were crossed, some local candidates ran ahead of the national ticket, split tickets were common. For the first time since 1800, Washington, D.C. citizens are permitted to participate in the voting. The Kennedys apparently still have great appeal for the public. Despite being labeled a "carpetbagger" by the opposition, Robert F. Kennedy, who resigned as Attorney General to run in New York, is elected Senator defeating the popular incumbent Kenneth Keating. His brother, Edward "Ted" Kennedy, is re-elected Senator from Massachusetts, retaining the seat once held by John F. Kennedy. But Pierre Salinger, former White House Press Secretary, goes down to defeat at the hand of GOP candidate George Murphy in california.
