Thousands of Muslims in Afghanistan and Pakistan protested against French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo on Friday.

The protesters accused Charlie Hebdo's publishers of blasphemy and called for the French government to apologise after the newspaper published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

The Afghan demonstrations in the capital, Kabul, and the western city of Herat took place after Friday prayers.

Different Pakistani political, religious and social organisations also protested against the caricatures.

In Karachi the Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam (JUI) and Jamaat Ahle Sunnat, among others, held their own separate rallies.

An attack on Charlie Hebdo's Paris office on 7 January killed 12 people.

Many across the Muslim world have protested against the satirical weekly's first issue after the attack, which shows a drawing of a tearful Prophet Muhammad holding a sign saying "Je suis Charlie (I am Charlie, a solidarity slogan following the attack)".
