"We knew that there were going to be 150 to 200 hardened al-Qaida in the area. We thought that their total numbers would be probably about 700 that would be a mixture of those who wouldn't fight and those who would fight a little and depart and then those that were the hardened al-Qaida that stayed until the end. And so the numbers that you see that are escalating we found was that there more hardened al-Qaida, which is exactly what we want."
