"He was extremely happy, you know, extremely happy, especially after we waited for almost 20 years, you know in the context of the reform movement. But in the context of Malaysia as a whole, we are talking about sixty years under the Barisan Nasional (BN) government, you know. So, obviously, he was very happy."
Malaysia's jailed opposition icon Anwar Ibrahim was "extremely happy" after Mahathir Mohamad led his four-party opposition alliance to a stunning election victory, Saifuddin Nasution from People's Justice Party said on Friday.
He spoke outside the hospital where Anwar is recuperating from a recent surgery.
Mahathir said the king has indicated he was willing to give an immediate pardon that would free Anwar.
Anwar was jailed in 2015 on sodomy charges he said were fabricated by the then-government to crush the opposition.
It was a second spell in prison for Anwar, a former deputy prime minister in the defeated ruling party who was also imprisoned under Mahathir in 1998 following a power struggle.
Anwar and Mahathir joined forces in an unlikely alliance that helped the opposition nailed the electoral victory.
