"That is why the democratic branches will say we think this particular comrade can lead us and that is why we could come to (inaudible). I don't think we have seen an organisation like that in this country. There isn't, there isn't about to be any that will go to that level. And I'm sure that you'll agree with me that the majority of the organisations only one person contests but in the ANC it is open. We believe that we are practicing democracy."
Outgoing ANC president Jacob Zuma had a walkabout on the grounds of the ANC's 54th national elective conference on Monday and told media that the organisation is highly democratic.
Counting of votes for the next president of South Africa's ruling African National Congress party has begun, after the polling took place through the night and on Monday morning, with the new leader of Nelson Mandela's storied liberation movement expected to be announced later in the day.
The ANC's new leader is likely to become South Africa's next president.
More than 4,700 ANC delegates have gathered on the outskirts of Johannesburg to vote for a new party leader as President Jacob Zuma's two terms as head of the party come to an end.
