VOICE-OVER:
LATER THIS MONTH... THOUSANDS OF VISITORS WILL DESCEND ON THE CITY OF SARAJEVO...
TO REMEMBER A SINGLE MOMENT A HUNDRED YEARS AGO...
SOUNDBITE (English) Adnan Vlajcic, Sarajevo City Hall Spokesman:
"It was the beginning of World War One, but now, today we want to use it as something positive."
A MUSEUM NOW MARKS THE SPOT WHERE ON JUNE 28 19-14 A SERBIAN TEENAGER ASSASSINATED ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND AND HIS WIFE...
IGNITING WORLD WAR ONE.
A CENTURY LATER... DEBATE LINGERS ON HOW TO DESCRIBE FERDINAD'S ASSASSIAN... Gavrilo ((Gohv- REEL-O)) PRINCIP.
WAS HE A TERRORIST OR A LIBERATOR?
FOR SOME THAT QUESTION IS PERSONAL.
SOUNDBITE (Serbian) Nikola Princip, nephew of Gavrilo Princip:
"For me, Gavrilo Princip is neither a hero nor a terrorist. He was a man who lived for his ideals. His people lived for the same ideals. His idea, and that of the people at the time, was to liberate the southern Slovak people from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy."
HIS NEPHEW LIGHTS A CANDLE AT A CHAPEL WHERE PRINCIP IS BURIED, AS OTHER RELATIVES PRAISE HIM.
((NATS - Novak Princip, great-grandson of Gavrilo Princip:))
"I'M REALLY HAPPY TO BE AT THIS MEMORIAL," HE SAYS. "BECAUSE I'M SO PROUD OF MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER."
OUTSIDE SARAJEVO, PRINCIP'S FAMILY HOME HAS BEEN DESTROYED THREE TIMES SINCE 19-14.
HIS GRANDSON WHO SHARES THE SAME NAME WANTS TO REBUILD.
SOUNDBITE (Serbian) Gavrilo Milo Princip, grandson of Gavrilo Princip:
"I hope this house will have a roof once again. I hope this house becomes a place where people will gather, people who cherish the brightest moments in history like the moment in Sarajevo when Gavrilo fired his two shots."
THERE ARE OTHERS OUTSIDE PRINCIP'S RELATIVES WHO CALL HIM A HERO... BUT LIKE MANY EVENTS IN THE BALKANS... HIS LEGACY OVER THE
PAST TEN DECADES HAS BEEN RECREATED TO SUIT CHANGING POLITICAL AGENDAS.
