3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Song Shuli, National Health Commission spokesperson:
"As of midnight of January 26th, the National Health Commission has received a total of 2,744 confirmed cases in 30 provinces, autonomous regions and cities. Of that, 461 are severe cases, and 80 are death cases."
5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) He Qinghua, senior inspector, National Health Commission disease control and prevention bureau:
"At present, the epidemic prevention and control is at a critical moment. It is necessary to give full play to the mobilisation ability of grass-roots communities, including rural communities, implement carpet-like tracking and grid-based management, and ensure every household and individual fully exercise the prevention and control measures. With the stable group control and prevention in the communities, anti-input, anti-spread and anti-output can be effectively realised."
China's National Health Commission on Monday said the death toll from a new virus had risen to 80, with 2,744 confirmed cases, 769 of which were new cases confirmed in the 24 hours through midnight Sunday.
A senior inspector of the Commission's Disease Control and Prevention Bureau said the situation was at a "critical moment" and urged local governments to strengthen community-based prevention and control.
The development came as China expanded sweeping efforts to contain the viral disease by extending the Lunar New Year holiday to keep the public at home and avoid spreading infection.
Increasingly drastic anti-disease efforts began with the suspension on 22 January of transport links to Wuhan, a city of 11 million people in central China where the virus was first detected last month.
That lockdown has expanded to a total of 17 cities with more than 50 million people in the most far-reaching disease-control measures ever imposed.
The virus is from the coronavirus family that includes the common cold, but also more severe illnesses like SARS and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.
The new virus causes cold- and flu-like symptoms, including cough and fever, and in more severe cases, shortness of breath and pneumonia.
