Electric vehicle fans kicked off a weeklong love fest of their gas-free rides Monday in a city already enamored with the plug in cars.

One out of five purely electric cars in the entire country was bought by San Franciscans this year.

One local rental car company, City Car Share, is in the process of converting its entire fleet to electric.

Statewide they're popular as well.

Teslas are outselling Porsches, Lincolns and Cadillacs in California, and Californians bought 34,000 Toyota hybrid Priuses so far this year.

There are also more charging stations per capita here than elsewhere.

But nationwide, many consumers are still wary of electric cars, feeling they're too expensive, too slow and don't get enough miles per charge.

Organizers of "Charge Across Town" EV Week say the event in California aims to eliminate some of these misconceptions.

New EV models can get up to 300 miles per charge and a few models cost under 20 thousand dollars.

But most importantly, EV advocates say, electric vehicles are much better for the environment compared to gas-guzzling cars.

There's a growing selection of all-electric cars these days, with almost twenty models now on the market.

New 2014 EV models on display and available for test drives at the car show include the new BMW i3 and the new Tesla Model X.

"Charge Across Town" EV Week moves on to San Jose in the heart of the Silicon Valley later this week.
