"I want to clearly show my feelings of solidarity to the people who were victims of the wall. My feelings of solidarity also go to the relatives of the victims who will never forget. And I think that we're also gathered here, as the mayor said, to learn what things can possibly happen in history and that this will never happen again - not in Germany, and not somewhere else in the world."

Hundreds of invited guests gathered at the former Checkpoint Charlie border crossing, to mark the 40th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall.

Speaking at the event was Charles C. Clay, Grandson of Lucius E. Clay, the Military governor of American occupied zone of Berlin in 1947.

Together with Rainer Hildebrandt, manager of the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, Clay unveiled a fragment of the Berlin wall which will be sent to Washington.

Earlier on Monday, there was a memorial service for an estimated one thousand people who died trying to flee to the West - 250 of them were killed at the wall itself.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder opened a new exhibition outlining the history of the wall and said "We must learn from history so that such things aren't repeated, not in Germany and not anywhere in the world."

Schroeder also marked the anniversary by laying a wreath at a memorial on Bernauer Strasse, which ran along the wall.

The street gained symbolic importance in the months after the wall went up as people jumped from windows of apartments on the eastern side to the street, which lay in the West.

Eventually, the windows were boarded up, and the buildings torn down.

But Bernauer Strasse continued to be an escape point through tunnels dug secretly beneath it.
