Iraqi federal police special forces engaged in a gun battle with Islamic State militants around the village of Abu Saif, south of Mosul, on Monday.
Iraqi forces are trying to take control of a strategic hill overlooking the city's airport.
While much of the hill has been taken, IS militants continue to resist in the village itself.
AP filmed the Iraqi police's rapid response team, who are heavily armed special forces, firing at the village.
Backed by aerial support from the US-led international coalition, Iraqi forces launched an offensive on Sunday to retake western Mosul from IS, following a 100-day campaign that pushed the militants from the eastern half of the city.
