Twenty-three year old Michael Epstein appeared in a Tel Aviv court
on Friday (10/11), the sixth person to be arrested in connection
with the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. A friend of Rabin's self
confessed kiler, police claim Epstein knew about the attmpt in
advance. His mother was in court to hear the judge rule that
Epstein could be held by the police for questioning for five days.
Israeli newspapers revealed that PLO chairman Yasser Arafat had
paid a personal visit to Yitzhak Rabin's widow Leah to express his
condolences. He said Mrs Rabin had insisted the peace process
continue. Evidence of the willingness of both sides to continue
the peace process was clear in Jenin, where Palestinian police are
preparing to replace Israeli troops. Jenin is the first West Bank
town to be handed back to the Palestinians. But in the West Bank
town of Nablus, there was unrest reminiscent of the height of the
Intifada. Palestinian youths pelted Israeli troops with rocks. The
soldiers replied with tear gas. But at the Jewish West Bank
settlement of Halhul, near Hebron, settlers and Palestinians
joined ranks to protest against the construction of a by-pass road
that will run though a Palestinian vineyard. The Israeli
government has proposed the development of alternative routes for
settlers use only to avoid violent contact with local
Palestinians.
