STORY

Both North and South Korea stated to clear landmines along their tense border on Thursday.

South and North Korean troops began demining in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), which has separated the two countries for nearly 50 years.

The next step will be to build a cross-border railway and a parallel road through the western sector of the four kilometre (2.5 mile) wide demilitarized zone, as agreed at an inter-Korean summit in 2000.

The two sides agreed to build another set of rail and road links through the eastern sector of the border.

Military cooperation is essential to the transportation links, because they will run through the mine-strewn border.

The Korean border is the world's most heavily armed frontier and guarded by nearly two (m) million troops on both sides.

Past inter-Korean agreements or projects often fell through when military tension flared.

The last train across the border ran shortly before the Korean War started in 1950.
