Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews blocked traffic on a main Jerusalem road on Wednesday protesting the arrest of a member of the religious community after he refused to perform compulsory military service.

Protesters mobbed intersections, preventing public transport and cars from moving.

Police were seen making arrests and leading away handcuffed protesters.

Military service is mandatory for most Jewish men in Israel, but the ultra-Orthodox community has won exemptions.
