SNTV Features
Here is the initial part of the annual 2007 SNTV news review - featuring the highlights of the first third of the calendar year.
It is the first instalment of a selection of the biggest headlines made in the sporting world from January to April this year, courtesy of the world's leading sports news video agency.
SUGGESTED VOICEOVER:
In the first week of the year, Australia completed the most crushing Ashes series victory in 86 years, sending bowling greats Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath into test retirement with a five-nil clean sweep of England.
The 10-wicket victory in Sydney was also the final game for Australian opener Justin Langer.
After the Aussies regained the precious urn, England captain Andrew Flintoff and leg-spinning genius Warne gave their reaction.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
"Yes, I've experienced both sides of it now. At the Oval in 2005, the jubilation and the joy of winning the Ashes and then today, and probably in Perth as well, I've experienced it on the other side and it's not very nice."
SUPERCAPTION: Andrew Flintoff, England captain.
Then the incomparable Warne took centre stage once more.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
At the moment, I think we are a long way ahead of the next best side, as you can see. England are rated as the second-best side and to win five-nil, you can't be any more comprehensive then that. So, there is a good gap between Australia and the next best side and that's not being arrogant, that's just facts."
SUPER CAPTION: Shane Warne, Australia's record wicket-taker.
January also saw David Beckham announce that he was to leave Real Madrid and sign a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy reportedly worth US$250 million.
Beckham eventually made the move in the summer, when his four-year contract with the Spanish giants expired, but the former England captain was keen to impress his new team-mates via a satellite link-up from Madrid to California.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
"One thing that you can always get from me is working hard and being a good team player. So, that's the biggest thing and, hopefully, a few goals would be nice."
SUPER CAPTION: David Beckham, former England captain.
There was a surprise at the Australian Open in Melbourne where unseeded Serena Williams, ranked number 81 in the world, thrashed top seed Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-2 to take her third Australian crown and eighth Grand Slam title.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
"Even I didn't expect to come in and win it all. I never expected to lose. But, you know, you just always stay so positive. You always go in. You always think, I'm going to win, I'm going to win. When it really happens, I still can't believe the tournament's over. I feel like there's another match to be played or there's something else. You know, it's an awesome feeling."
SUPER CAPTION: Serena Williams, 2007 Australian Open champion.
It was business as usual in the men's singles though where defending champion and top seed, Roger Federer of Switzerland, beat Chile's Fernando Gonzalez 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-4.
He became the first player since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win a Grand Slam event without dropping a set - on his way to a 10th Grand Slam title.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
Of course, now that it's all over, it's great to look back and think, Wow, you know, not having dropped a set. It's quite amazing."
SUPER CAPTION: Roger Federer
Back on European soil and Michel Platini was named as the new President of UEFA at the 31st Ordinary Congress in Duesseldorf, Germany.
The former French international footballer beat his predecessor Lennart Johannson by a margin of just four votes in the hard-fought Presidential election to earn a four-year term as the head of European football's governing body.
Once the votes had been counted, UEFA Vice-President Senes Erzik read out the eagerly-awaited result.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
"The first ballot has given the following results: elected as UEFA President with a mandate of four years is…..... Monsieur Platini Michel."
SUPER CAPTION: Senes Erzik, UEFA Vice-President.
Platini had won the election by a margin of four votes - 27 to 23 - with two ballot papers having been spoiled.
A sporting Johansson was quick to congratulate his successor, offering a warm hug and a handshake.
Into February and the travelling supporters of the Indianapolis Colts celebrated their side's first Superbowl title in 37 years.
The Colts beat the Chicago Bears 29-17 in a rain-soaked Dolphin Stadium in Miami.
Peyton Manning, playing in his ninth season, was named the game's MVP in Super Bowl XLI.
Despite the conditions, the enthusiasm of these Colts supporters couldn't be dampened as the Bears were denied their first NFL title since they beat the New England Patriots back in 1986.
Liverpool became the latest English football (soccer) club to be owned by foreign parties.
It was announced that Americans George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks had agreed a deal to buy a 51 percent stake in the club.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
"My background is love of the sport. I honestly would not kid you to tell you that I've been a long-time Liverpool fan, because that would be a fib."
SUPER CAPTION: George Gillett Jr., Liverpool F.C. co-owner.
Gillett Jr. and Hicks, who own NHL sides the Montreal Canadiens and the Dallas Stars respectively, offered $342.7 million U.S. dollars (£174.1 million sterling) for a majority shareholding in the five-time European champions - and also paid off the club's $88.2 million U.S. dollars (£44.8 million sterling) debt.
Former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich announced his retirement from cycling - amid continuing investigations of his alleged role in a Spanish doping scandal.
The 34-year-old German, who won the Tour in 1997 and was runner-up five times, said he would stay in the sport as a consultant for the Austrian-based Volksbank team.
Finally in February, the US President George W. Bush welcomed the 2005-2006 NBA champions, the Miami Heat, to the White House in Washington D.C.
Miami came back from a two-nil deficit in the finals, after winning four successive games, to defeat the Dallas Mavericks four-two and claim the franchise's first NBA title in their 18th season.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
"Yeah, they had the stars. Everybody knew who the stars are. But it was the capacity to play together, to put the team ahead of themselves, that enabled them to be here at the White House saying congratulations, NBA Champs."
SUPER CAPTION: George W. Bush, U.S. President.
The President enjoying his personalised jersey and basketball from the Heat - despite Miami defeating a team from his native Texas.
All 16 teams competing in the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup gathered for a final photo session, just hours before the official opening of the competition in the picturesque surroundings of Montego Bay, Jamaica.
The captains walked onto the beach to pose in front of the official World Cup trophy, with the hosts captain Brian Lara and the skipper of the defending championsm Ricky Ponting of Australia, leading the pack.
The first major shock of the tournament arrived when Pakistan's suffered a three-wicket defeat against monnows Ireland on the first Saturday of the tournament.
Around 50 protesters in Inzamam-ul-Haq's hometown of Multan in central Pakistan also burned an effigy of their hero to show their anguish.
However, a much greater shock was just about to reverberate around the tournament that generated real mourning.
Just hours after the defeat to Ireland, Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer died in hospital after being found unconscious in his hotel room in Jamaica.
Initially it was thought that the 58-year-old had died of a suspected heart attack but two days later after the post-mortem the police held a news conference to say they were treating the death as suspicious.
As Pakistan trained ahead of their final match against Zimbabwe, new Pakistan stand-in coach Mushtaq Ahmed described the death as the worst thing to happen to Pakistan cricket.
While Pakistan legend Imran Khan dispelled the rumours now circulating that Woolmer had been murdered.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"That feeling, we can't explain into words. He was a great guy, Bob was a humble man and a great fellow, and a great coach. One of the best coaches I have ever come across."
SUPER CAPTION: Mushtaq Ahmed, stand-in Pakistan coach.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
"I do not think there is any foul play, unless I see black-and-white evidence of it. I'm convinced that it was from natural causes - and of course, stress. But stress because of, probably, his medical condition."
SUPER CAPTION: Imran Khan, former Pakistan captain.
Then, two days later, as rumours, counter-rumours and further allegations abounded around a shellshocked Caribbean, Jamaican police spokesman Karl Angell announced in Kingston that the death of Woolmer was now being regarded as murder.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
"The pathologist's report is now available and states that Mr. Woolmer's death was due to asphyxia as a result of manual strangulation. In these circumstances, the matter of Mr. Robert Woolmer's death is now being treated by the Jamaica Police as a case of murder."
SUPER CAPTION: Karl Angell, Jamaican police spokesman.
Meanwhile, back in Europe, as investigations continued into the shrouded mystery of Woolmer's death in the West Indies, the French rugby union XV had been the guests of honour at a ceremony at the Disneyland resort in Paris.
'Les Blues' had clinched their third Six Nations crown in four years with an emphatic 46-19 win over Scotland at the Stade de France the previous weekend.
The margin of victory gave them a superior tournament points difference to Ireland as they regained their Six Nations title.
Back in Beijing, there may have been nothing officially organised but hundreds of residents gathered in Tiananmen square to watch the countdown clock move to show just 500 days until the opening of the Olympics.
The big day was to be on August the 8th, the one-year remaining mark, which also signalled the start of several months of test events.
But the news continued to be dominated by the circumstances surrounding the death of Bob Woolmer. Muslims joined Christians in observing a minute of silence, as they lit candles and offered prayers in a memorial for him at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in the eastern city of Lahore, the home of Pakistani cricket.
Former Pakistan team captain Inzamam-ul-Haq offered flowers on behalf of his team members.
Inzamam resigned as captain and stepped down from one-day international cricket following the team's humiliating elimination from the World Cup before the second stages.
It wouldn't be until June that the rumours surrounding Woolmer would go away when it was anounced that he had indeed died of natural causes.
Stateside now and to the Augusta National, where Zach Johnson shot a final round 69 to win the US Masters, which was the American's first major title.
The 31-year-old holed three birdies in four holes on the back nine as he took a surprise victory by two shots from Tiger Woods and the South African duo of Rory Sabbatini and Retief Goosen to claim the famous green jacket.
SOUNDBITE: (English):
"So, I had a great number on 16 and a great target and managed to execute it properly and I managed to make a birdie there which obviously helped. You know you may not know where Tiger is, but you can feel him for obvious reasons. It was not over until he hit his second shot on the 18th, I just feel very lucky."
SUPER CAPTION: Zach Johnson, 2007 U.S. Masters champion.
Decision day in Wales as the winning bid to host the 2012 European Championships was revealed.
UEFA president Michel Platini announced the winner at Cardiff City Hall. Italy had been the overwhelming favourites but when the envelope was opened there was a surprise - Poland and Ukraine had been selected to co-host the prestigious tournament.
Amid jubilant scenes, an emotional former Olympic pole vault champion, Sergei Bubka welcomed the decision.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
"This is needed today, especially needed in the political situation in my country. We should have something which unites the nation and saves our future."
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Bubka, part of the Ukrainian delegation.
Finally, back to the Caribbean and the cricket World Cup and another shock - West Indies captain Brian Lara announcing his retirement from all international cricket after his side's final match against England.
The 38-year-old, considered as the most gifted batsman of his generation by many, was close to tears as he brought a close to a career that saw him become Test cricket's all-time leading scorer with 11,953 runs from 131 Tests while holding the record for the highest Test score, 400 not out against England in Antigua in 2004.
SOUNDBITE: (English).
"This is the last question, I'll just say that I have given this extensive consideration and I just want everybody to know that on Saturday I am going to bid farewell to international cricket as a player."
SUPER CAPTION: Brian Lara, West Indies captain.
Sadly for the ICC a troubled World Cup finished in a farcical manner as Australia won a on sided final against Sri Lanka.
After Sri Lanka had accepted the offer of bad light still needing 63 from 18 balls most thought they had conceded defeat.
But the umpires forced the players back onto the ground to play out the final three overs in near darkness before Ricky Pontings men could celebrate for real.
SOUNDBITE (English)
"I actually thought he was having a joke with us to try and stop our celebrations, he said, it looks like we are going to have to come back tomorrow and bowl three overs, all the guys stopped and looked at him. I said mate we have played the twenty overs we have actually finished a game, we have concluded a game. But we came back out and bowled three more overs so, it was a little bit of a disappointing way to end a World Cup."
SUPER CAPTION: Ricky Ponting, Australian captain.
Australia now unbeaten in 29 matches in World Cups as they added a third World Cup title to their one-day cricket list of honours.
