July - and after the death of Eusebio at the start of the year, we bade farewell to another footballing giant.
Alfredo di Stefano died on the 7th - two days after suffering a heart attack.
He was 88 years old.
Revered at the Bernabeu, the two-time former European Player of the Year scored a remarkable 216 goals in 284 appearances for Real Madrid.
Di Stefano played international football for both Argentina, his country of birth, and Spain.
The Real faithful will be hoping that this man can at least attempt to emulate di Stefano's feats for the club - though one individual was rather too excited by the arrival of Colombian striker James Rodriguez.
The top scorer at the World Cup with six goals, Rodriguez signed a six-year contract after moving for a reported 80 million euros (108 million US dollars) from French Ligue 1 side Monaco.
Toni Kroos was the club's other major import over the summer.
Plenty of activity on the transfer front elsewhere in Spain, with Ivan Rakitic leaving Seville for Barcelona.
The 26-year-old Croatia midfielder signed a five-year deal.
His compatriot Mario Mandzukic also arrived in the country.
The former Bayern Munich striker signed a two-year deal with league champions Atletico Madrid.

Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic was looking forward to a new challenge in Serie A.
The Serbian defender joined Inter Milan as a free agent after eight seasons at Old Trafford.
Over at city rivals AC, Filippo Inzaghi was unveiled as the team's new manager on July the 10th.
In the wake of a hugely disappointing eighth-place finish in the league, Inzaghi's ex-Milan team-mate Clarence Seedorf was relieved of his duties after only four months in charge.
With 126 goals in 300 appearances for the 'Rossoneri', Inzaghi will hope to recreate some of his past successes on the field in his new role.
Ashley Cole signed a two-year deal with AS Roma.
The 33-year-old left-back had spent the past eight seasons with Chelsea, and was with London rivals Arsenal for the previous six years.
He's the highest-profile English player to come to Italy since David Beckham's two loan spells with AC Milan in 2009 and 2010.
Massimo Allegri was unveiled as the new boss of Juventus on July the 16th, one day after Antonio Conte stepped down from the Turin club.

Jardim signed a two-year deal and succeeded Claudio Ranieri, who was sacked at the end of the 2013 season, despite guiding Monaco to second in the table.
The former Italy national coach Cesare Prandelli signed a two-year contract to coach Turkish giants Galatasaray.
Louis van Gaal was avoiding making any promises to instantly revive Manchester United's fortunes.
The Dutchman, who guided the Netherlands to a third-place finish at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, was formally introduced as United's new manager on July the 17th
Van Gaal was the full-time successor to David Moyes, who was dismissed after less than a year as Alex Ferguson's replacement.
Exactly two weeks after Brazil were humiliated 7-1 by Germany in the 2014 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, Dunga was appointed as the new national team manager to replace Luiz Felipe Scolari.
It is the second time that Dunga has managed Brazil.
And Dick Advocaat was unveiled as the new manager of the Serbian national team on July the 28th, after a signing a two-year contract.
The Dutchman replaced Sinisa Mihajlovic, who took up the managerial reins at Italian Serie A club Sampdoria.

Sunday, July the 6th - and Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in a thrilling Wimbledon men's final 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4 in three hours and 56 minutes.
His second title at SW19 allowed the Serb to regain the world number one ranking for the first time since September 2013.
A day earlier and Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic claimed her second Wimbledon crown with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Canada's Eugenie Bouchard in the women's final.
Golf and in her 64th tournament, Mo Martin finally tasted victory - and what a victory it was.
Ranked 99th in the world at the start of the week, the 31-year-old American won the women's British Open at Royal Birkdale on July the 13th.

Just a little bit of soccer news - but it was a huge story...
Despite his controversial coming together with Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup meeting with Italy, Barcelona decided to take a risk on the brilliant - if flawed - Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez.
A 75 million-pound deal was agreed with Liverpool.
Suarez was cleared on the 14th of August to play friendlies for Barcelona after the Court of Arbitration for Sport softened FIFA's decision to ban Suarez from all football activities for four months.
He was still prohibited from playing in a competitive match until October the 25th.
And San Lorenzo's biggest fan wanted to personally congratulate the team on their Copa Libertadores triumph.
Pope Francis granted the team from Buenos Aires an audience, shortly after they had defeated Nacional of Paraguay 1-0 to win the South American continental title for the first time.
Tennis - and Serena Williams won her third successive US Open title - and sixth overall - when she brushed aside Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-3 at Flushing Meadows on September the 7th.
Her 18th Grand Slam in total, Serena went level with Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert on the all-time list.
Ecstasy in Medjugorje, Bosnia, as the town's most famous native lifted the men's title.
Marin Cilic won his maiden Grand Slam title on September 8th, beating Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in the final.
It was the first US Open final since 1997 to be contested between two players making their Grand Slam final debut.
Seeded 14 ahead of the tournament, Cilic beat both Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych in straight sets, en route to his place in the final.
Under the guidance of Goran Ivanisevic - the only other Croatian player to lift a Grand Slam title - Cilic claimed the win after less than two hours on court.
A few days later, Cilic received a hero's welcome back in Medugorje.
No megastars in the side - the likes of LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul had all absented themselves - but the US were still way too strong for the field at basketball's World Cup in Madrid.

A South African judge found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Judge Thokozile Masipa said that the double-amputee athlete was not guilty of murder, as prosecutors had alleged.
This tragic tale reached its conclusion on October the 21st, when Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison - though he could serve as little as 10 months.
