Chinese head coach Jia Xiuquan and captain Wu Haiyan talked on Friday ahead of their 2019 Women World Cup opener in Rennes, France.

China is dreaming of a surprise return to the FIFA Women's World Cup as head coach Jia Xiuquan said he wants to "break the record" during an official press conference.  

Known as "The Steel Roses", China suffered a narrow penalty shoot-out defeat against hosts USA in the 1999 World Cup Final.

Having failed to qualify for Germany 2011, China were knocked out by USA in the quarter-finals four years ago in Canada.

Jia Xiuquan's side reached the final of the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta, and their star forward Wang Shuang won the Asian Women's Player of the Year, scoring eight goals in her first season at Paris Saint-Germain.

China will face Germany, Spain and South Africa in Group B.
