"It's based on the Lexus LS500h, the P4 is smarter, more agile and more responsive than any of its predecessors. It can process sensor inputs faster and react more quickly to the surrounding environment."

"So today it's my pleasure to share with you, our newest Guardian and Chauffeur test pad - The TRI P4 Research vehicle."

"This P4 will join the TRI test fleet in the Spring of this year, further accelerating our development of both Chauffeur and Guardian."
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Gill Pratt, Chief Executive Officer, Toyota Research Institute
"Now from the beginning TRI has been committed to a two track approach to automated driving. Simultaneously developing Toyota Guardian while working on Level 4 and Level 5 self-driving systems that we call Toyota Chauffeur."

"The essence of Toyota Guardian is about amplifying rather than replacing human ability. It's like giving dad his car keys back for a bit more time behind the wheel. Or even more importantly it's about saving teenage lives where car crashes account for 30 per cent of fatalities."

"Now Chauffeur is ther kind of self driving technology that all of you hear about in the press all of the time. Specifically it's an approach that replaces the human driver with AI, with a machine. Level 5 Chauffeur is defined as a system that's capable of driving anywhere, anytime in any conditions with no driver input."

"We're developing Guardian, we'll build it and today for the first time we're announcing that we're going to offer it as well to the industry. And that is what Guardian For All is all about."

"Actually, Toyota has talked about their Chauffeur and their Guardian programmes before, so today they kind of went and said; 'This is what we've been focused on for the last year.' And it's an interesting proposal, take the technology that you know, take the sensors that you have and make the regular driver a better driver than they were before. Certainly, the opportunity to mitigate accidents is a strong one."

Arriving on stage, Toyota's latest autonomous research vehicle: the TRI P4.
"It's based on the Lexus LS500h," explains Chief Executive Officer, Toyota Research Institute, Gill Pratt.
"The P4 is smarter, more agile and more responsive than any of its predecessors. It can process sensor inputs faster and react more quickly to the surrounding environment."
It uses two semi-autonomous systems, which Toyota is currently developing, dubbed "Guardian" and "Chauffeur".
"The essence of Toyota Guardian is about amplifying rather than replacing human ability," explains Pratt about the system which offers driver assistance technology such as emergency braking, cruise control and lane keeping.
Chauffeur is being developed to become a fully autonomous system, functioning without a driver.
"Specifically it's an approach that replaces the human driver with AI, with a machine. Level 5 Chauffeur is defined as a system that's capable of driving anywhere, anytime in any conditions with no driver input," adds Pratt.
Stephanie Brinley, Principal Automotive Analyst at IHS Markit says the combination of technology Toyota is offering has potential to make roads safer places:
"Actually, Toyota has talked about their Chauffeur and their Guardian programmes before, so today they kind of went and said; 'This is what we've been focused on for the last year.' And it's an interesting proposal, take the technology that you know, take the sensors that you have and make the regular driver a better driver than they were before. Certainly, the opportunity to mitigate accidents is a strong one."
The P4 features four surrounding cameras to provide a 360 degree of the vehicle's surroundings as well as numerous sensors.
Toyota also used CES to announce that they will offer their Guardian technology out to the industry once it's been developed.
