UK - Globe Theatre Is Renamed The Gielgud
Dateline: LONDON (2/11)
Date: 02/11/1994 04:00 AM
A London theatre was renamed on Wednesday (2/11) in honour of
British actor Sir John Gielgud. The Globe playhouse on Shaftsbury
Avenue in London's West End theatre district is now The Gielgud.
At a champagne ceremony at the theatre, he called the name change
"flattering, complimentary and unique." The rechristening meant that London now has only one Globe Theatre, the ongoing enterprise begun by the late American actor-producer Sam Wanamaker to rebuild
Shakespeare's theatre on the south bank of the River Thames.
