"I would say that we are not closer to understanding that motive. What happens with the psyche of a 19-year-old kid, I can't speak to that. Determining the motive is an exceptionally important thing for law enforcement to try to understand, one, why they did it but two, are they acting in collaboration with any other individuals? Are they inspired by some other organization? Were they radicalized online? What were the real factors that induced this person to take this heinous action?"

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Craig Fair, FBI Deputy Special Agent in Charge:
"Anytime we are collecting evidence, particularly in a mass shooting like this, it's very slow. It's a very methodical process. It has to be done with deliberation and that takes a high volume of personnel. Roughly we have about 60 people that are processing the scene currently. That takes anywhere from three to five days in a crime scene of this size."

The rural community of Gilroy, California, is reeling in the wake of a shooting at its annual garlic festival. But at a Monday night vigil, hundreds of residents vowed to remain "Gilroy Strong." Authorities are still seeking a motive for Sunday's attack by a 19-year-old who killed three people and wounded a dozen more before police working secutiry at the festival fatally shot him.
"I would say that we are not closer to understanding that motive," said FBI Deputy Special Agent in Charge Craig Fair. "What happens with the psyche of a 19-year-old kid, I can't speak to that."
The shooter, Santino William Legan, legally purchased the semi-automatic military-style rifle this month in Nevada, where his last address is listed. Under a California law that went into effect Jan. 1, residents younger than 21 are barred from firearms purchases unless they are in the military or law enforcement. The minimum purchase age is 18 in Nevada, where firearms laws are less restrictive.
While authorities sought a motive for the killings, he had posted white supremacist views. He urged his Instagram followers to read a 19th century book popular with white supremacists on extremist websites. It appeared with a photo of Smokey the Bear in front of a "fire danger" sign. Legan also complained about overcrowding towns and paving open space to make room for "hordes" of Latinos and Silicon Valley whites.
