TIME HONOURS THE INFLUENTIAL
The international news magazine, 'TIME,' celebrated their list of the 100 most influential people in the world with a black tie event at New York's Lincoln Center, on Tuesday night (19APR05).
Singer Melissa Etheridge, who is battling breast cancer, performed in front of the 350 plus audience. After Etheridge, Juanes, the Columbian rock star, made his way onto the stage and rocked the house.
The 'TIME' 100 most influential people list hit newsstands on April 11th.
The issue features well-known profiles on those being honoured, written by special contributors from all over the world.
Singer Lisa Maria Presley wrote of her friend Melissa Etheridge that her: "fearlessness was never clearer than at this year's Grammy Awards when, completely bald after nearly five months of treatment for breast cancer, she gave a wrenching, rocking performance of Janis Joplin's 'Piece of My Heart.' I was bawling backstage. She walked off and seemed to have no idea that she had done something extraordinary. She was just being Melissa: honest, defiant, fists in the air."
Donald Trump, the celebrity businessman, wrote about his new business partner Martha Stewart: "The head of 'TIME' magazine asked me to do it. I was honoured to do it. The writing process was easy because I know her and she's a brave woman."
The two are developing a new reality show focusing on self-styled domestic goddess Stewart - who recently spent five months in a federal prison for lying to investigators about a personal stock trade.
Nicole Kidman, the Oscar-winning actress, pulled double duty, first attending the premiere of her film, 'The Interpreter,' and then heading to the 'TIME' event.
Also on the list is Bollywood star, Aishwarya Rai, the Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, who starred in 'Hero,' 'House of Flying Daggers' and '2046,' and Jerry Bruckheimer, the Hollywood mogul behind such blockbusters as 'Pearl Harbor' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean.'
'TIME' managing editor, Jim Kelly, says this year's list of influential people is decided by how these people help others, how they have grown in the past year and who has made the most astounding technological inventions.
Among those profiled in the now annual project are actor Jamie Foxx, 'The Da Vinci Code' author Dan Brown and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Filmmaker Michael Moore, whose 2004 documentary 'Fahrenheit 9/11' takes on the Bush administration, appears in the "Artists and Entertainers" category.
Also named on the list are Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood, rapper Jay-Z, Karl Rove - architect of George Bush's re-election campaign - and terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
