"It's very clear that the same forces that fueled this Brexit vote in the U.K. are at play here in the U.S. Donald Trump's supporters are very much fueled by economic populism ousim and nationalist pride, if you will, almost bordering on xenophobia at times. "I think for anyone who thought that Donald Trump really might not have a strong chance here in America, watching what happened in Great Britain is clearly a wake up call. That kind of politics can be succesful. It was successful there when virtually the whole political establishment and economic establishment and just about every expert thought it wouldn't be a good idea but it happened anyway. We're seeing similar things playing out here in the U.S. So I think for anyone thinking Donald Trump is a little bit too outside the norm to be successful, this really is a wake up call."

Britain's stunning vote to bolt from the European Union sent political tremors across the Atlantic Friday, fueling Donald Trump's confidence that frustrated U.S. voters will back similarly sweeping change and rattling Democrats who are banking on Americans ultimately choosing a more conventional leader in Hillary Clinton.

The British referendum was no exact mirror of the U.S. political landscape. The American electorate is far more diverse and Trump is deeply unpopular with minority voters, a serious weakness dogging his Republican candidacy. The referendum also centered on a single issue, while the presidential election can be as much a decision about personality and temperament as candidates' policies.

Yet the parallels between the forces that drove the British vote and those at the core of Trump's campaign are striking. Among them: a belief that globalization is hurting the working class, and increased immigration is changing the country's character. In both nations, there is strong resentment of political elites who often appear to have little connection to the voters they're supposed to represent.

The British referendum comes as Trump tries to rebound from one of the worst stretches of his campaign. He's struggled to raise money and build a robust organization for the general election, and this week he shook up his operation by firing campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.

"Brexit is a wakeup call," said AP political reporter Steve Peoples. "We're seeing similar things playing out here in the U.S."
