"Under the (Russian) occupation, people were dying, a lot of people were killed in cars while trying to evacuate from the city, a lot of people were killed by explosions and gunshots and (bodies) were lying on streets. The morgue was full, it wasn't possible to bury people at the cemetery, since we were not able to physically reach the cemetery. Peaceful civilians going to the cemetery could have been killed on the way."

A widow who said her husband had been killed by Russian troops in the town of Bucha on Monday begged Ukraine and Russia to come to a peace agreement.

Tanya Nedashkivs'ka said her husband Vasyl Nedashkivskyi was detained by Russian troops stationed in her neighbourhood in the town near the capital, Kyiv.

After the Russians left, she found his body dumped at the bottom of a staircase leading to the basement of a nearby building, alongside two other bodies.

The 57-year-old ended up burying her husband in the garden outside the apartment building where they lived.

Standing in the street near where she lives, Nedashkivs'ka pleaded for an end to the bloody conflict.

"For all the wives and mothers, make peace on Earth so no one ever griefs again, no one, neither Ukrainian, or Russian," the widow implored.

Ukrainian officials say the bodies of hundreds of civilians were found in Bucha and other towns around Kyiv following the retreat of Russian troops.

Some of the bodies found strewn across Bucha have been buried in a mass grave in the grounds of a church in the centre of town.

At least 68 people were buried there on March 10, according to the priest of the church.

Father Andrii Galavin said many bodies had been found abandoned in the streets and the morgue at the nearby hospital was full.

Locals decided to collect and move the bodies to the church's courtyard for burial in one big grave.

More bodies were committed to the same grave in the following days, Galavin said.

But many more were buried wherever relatives could because it was too dangerous to move the remains to the church.
