Israel on Thursday (13/4) sealed off the Gaza Strip and West Bank
from 1500 hours local time until the end of the Passover holiday
on Sunday morning (16/4) to reduce the danger of suicide attacks
from Islamic militants over the holiday weekend.
Speaking to reporters after visiting soldiers wounded in
Sunday's bus bombing, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin said it will be
weeks, if not months, before the effectiveness of the PLO
clampdown can be assessed.
Also striking at the heart of Islamic militants, the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Thursday demanded the surrender of all hand guns in the possession of civilians.
.
Khaled El Khadra, Attorney General in Gaza, told reporters a
one-month amnesty for the handing in of weapons has commenced and
that those wishing to have arms could now apply for a permit.
Hamas spokesman, Doctor Mohammed A. Zahar, told supporters at a
rally late on Wednesday (12/4) to defy the new law.
The clampdown came as Palestinians demonstrated against the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank near the town of Ramallah. At least 150 Palestinians from the villages of Qaddis and Nehalim
marched onto land near the settlement of Kiryat Sefer, where they
claim the plans will lead to the confiscation of their land.
