Final World Cup preparations were underway on Wednesday in the Russian cities of Moscow, Sochi, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

The noise level is rising - there's an explosion of colour as football fans are arriving in cities across Russia.

Unsurprisingly, there are particularly large, boisterous crowds in the capital.

And the mood was uniformly good.

As it should be, before a ball is kicked, and bitter disappointment, for some, sets in.

"Here we're sharing the common the spirit of the goal, that's what unites people. Football is unity of people, fans," said Colombia supporter, Jose Forero.

And from home fans - hopeless optimism - mixed with grim realism.

"We hope for the victory of our team (Russia). We understand that the chances are small. We hope that they will reach the semi-finals, or the quarter-finals," opined Yekaterinburg resident, Anna Repina.
