2. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Driscoll, Defense Attorney +++SOT PARTIALLY COVERED BY PREVIOUS STILL AND BROLL+++
"We disagree strongly with the court sentence, but we accept the authority and ruling of the court to the 18 month sentence. We expect that Maria should be back to Russia, hopefully in the fall sometime, maybe November depending on how one calculates the time, the time served. I think this case is an unfortunate result. I think that our government, and our educational institutions have got to take a close look at the government's theory of this case. I think would apply very broadly to very large numbers of people. If the government's theory is that you act as an agent whenever you do anything for a foreign official. I think that is an extremely broad interpretation that can apply not only to people like Maria but to other people. And I think it's something that should be looked at."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Driscoll, Defense Attorney
"I feel terrible for Maria's family. To the extent her father sees this, we hope to get your daughter home as soon as we can. I wish we could have done more to get her out sooner. I do not believe an additional nine months in jail serves any purpose in terms of punishment or contrition at this point. She's already spent nine months in jail."
