"I remember his enthusiasm, his voice. I remember how much he loved film, filmmaking, cinema, being on the set. All the encouragement he gave others, of him being that first movie, you know, that movie I did with him a little movie called 'Boyz N the Hood.' That was just a watershed moment in cinema, in filmmaking history. And that he was a young 23-year old, and yet he had such competence, and confidence, and he passed it on every - every day."
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Angela Bassett/Actress:
Reporter: "What gave a young actress like you the confidence to want to be directed by such a young man?"
"You know I was doing – I wasn't doing many movies at that time. I was doing a lot of television, a lot of theater. But I had recently come to LA, you know, to get into film and television. I sort of landed in television, and sort felt like I was being kept there. 'Oh, she's a television actor.' But he didn't see it that way. He didn't see it that way. You can count me among the grateful many, the grateful number who appreciate the difference that he made in my life, you know, by opening up, opening his sights and saying, 'yeah, you can play this Reva, you're perfect for her.' So, he gave me an opportunity. And that - that opened up other casting directors and director's eyes. It gave me – it allowed me to be seen. So, he gave me a big shot."
