Clawson, Michigan - 18 March 2019
1. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer introduces Senator/Presidential Candidate Kirsten Gillibrand, Democrat from New York
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, (D) Presidential Candidate:
"The reason why I will defeat President Trump is in my entire time in congress, I have chosen to bring people together. I have chosen to reach across the aisle to get things done to bring our state together."
3. Wide, Gillibrand listens to question
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, (D) Presidential Candidate:
"One of the worst things a President Trump has done as president of the United States is he has stepped away from the world stage. He is unwilling to lead globally. America has always been this beacon of light and hope. This place where we create leadership for the world and do the right thing, especially when it's hard. President Trump has walked away in every instance. He's walked away from the global climate accords. He is unwilling to take global climate change as a serious risk to humanity that it actually is. And I have a plan to actually take our global climate change, not only with the Green New Deal, which I will describe in a bit, but also putting a price on carbon so we can use market forces to increase innovation entrepreneurism and create jobs here in Michigan all across the country."
5. Wide, Gillibrand taking question from audience
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, (D) Presidential Candidate:
"He's failed to lead on foreign policy. When he's unwilling to stand up to the Russians, whether he's in Helsinki, whether he's talking about Syria, whether he's talking about the Iran nuclear deal, an unwillingness to stand up to them and make them do the right thing. An unwillingness to stand up to Saudi Arabia when you have the Khashoggi murders. An unwillingness to say right versus wrong and say you need to do something about the massacre displacement of so many millions of people in Syria. He is unwilling to stop the horrors that are happening in Yemen. It is because he's unwilling to lead."
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, a Democratic presidential candidate, stopped in the vote-rich Detroit area for multiple events, a year before the state's primary.
Gillibrand campaigned at an event hosted by Fems for Dems inside a Clawson furniture and women's clothing store, talking up policy priorities such as the Green New Deal and Medicare for All. In attendance was Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who has encouraged presidential candidates to visit the state and said Gillibrand was "the first to call."
Gillibrand used the event to blast President Trump's foreign policy, saying Trump is unwilling to lead and unwilling to stand up to Russia and Saudi Arabia.
