"Mama has been my chance to really be my version of Chris Rock. I get to talk about everything that's bugging me, everything is bugging everybody, and it's really been fun to keep her topical and push her into the new century. She's still an ornery old lady like she always was and she's still funny as hell but she's concerned about a lot of the stuff that's going on in the world. I mean she has an opinion about everything, you know, from gay marriage to women driving in the car putting their makeup on, to cooking shows to what's going to happen to my Social Security. You know, she's got a lot to worry about."

4.SOUNDBITE (English) Vicki Lawrence, actress:
"I don' think Mama has ever been off the air since she was on, so it starts to span many generations and I was really amazed. Early on, when I started doing the show and when I first put the show together, Mama entered from the back of the house and we were at this casino that was huge, like the back of the house was a mile away. So, they got me one of those scooters that old people drive around, so that I could get up to the stage, you know, in under an hour. Anyway, I'm hauling ass up the aisle and I'm turning left, turning right and turned down this one row and there were a bunch of college guys and I backed up and I looked at them and they were screaming and shouting and clapping and I said, 'Really?' And they said, 'Oh my God, we would not have gotten through without Mama.' And it's funny because those guys watched my show, they heard the Vicky half of the show, they got all the back stories, they start watching the Burnett show online and they find you backwards. They come back to the show and they go, 'Wow you were really hot when you were young,' and it's sort of like this weird back to the future thing. And it's kind of amazing how you just keep spanning all these generations and have a character that that many generations relate to and love. It's just a gift_ a gift from Carol. She didn't want to play the part, you know."
