It was a moment years in the making when a paralyzed graduate rose from his wheelchair and walked across the stage to get his diploma.
“I felt pride because I’m not only doing this for me, but for my family as well.” Said Aldo Amenta, the Florida International student who lost the use of his legs after breaking his neck while diving in shallow water in 2015.
“I made up my mind of walking across the stage, because since I got paralyzed, my dream is to walk again.”
Amenta practiced extensively for that moment, undergoing intense therapy using an expensive mechanical exoskeleton.
When the time came for Amenta to walk on December 9th, the crowd cheered in a video which has since gone viral.
Amenta says he hopes to inspire others, “There’s always hope. There’s always a chance and you just need to find that light.”
