The funeral of Yugoslavian leader Edvard Kardelj, the man who it was thought would succeed President Tito. Tito is present, along with Kardelj's widow and military guard of honour. Kardelj had long been seen as the next leader of Yugoslavia but died from cancer while the much older President Tito goes on apparently in sturdy good-health. Tito cut short his four-nation tour of the Middle East to return for the funeral of his old comrade, a gesture that indicated his feelings for the man who had been his closest adviser for more than 40 years. Kardelj, a native of Ljubljana, the capital of the north-western republic of Slovenia, died at the age of 69. His funeral comes after three days of national mourning. The urn containing his ashes is placed in Ljubljana's cemetery for national heroes after a solemn funeral ceremony and parade through the rainy streets of the town.
