2. SOUNDBITE (English), D.J. Pierce AKA Shangela, Actor
"Oh, absolutely. I think just being here today is a true testament that anyone in this world, not only do you belong, are you valid, but also you have a place. And it starts with accepting yourself. You know, when I came to find when I really accepted myself and loved who I was, then the sky is the limit. And I think that anyone watching this moment here, knowing there are people out here who love you, who support you, but also knowing that if you believe in yourself, honey, anything you want in this world is possible."
SOUNDBITE (English), Jenifer Lewis, actress:
"That's right. And this administration is trying to take away a lot from the gay community and I, what? We're going to stand on the front line for that. Hello!"
3. Various of Brian Tyree Henry on carpet
4. SOUNDBITE (English), Brian Tyree Henry, actor:
"I mean, I can't even find the words to say it. It's just been so great. I have family with both movies and it's just been an experience that's been unlike anything else and I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's really great—to tell these stories of these people of these families of a culture that people need to know about. We're here—there's a biracial Spider-Man and there's a black love story going on ('If Beale Street Could Talk'). These are things I never saw when I was coming up so I'm really glad there's representation going on."
5. Various of Barry Jenkins posing
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Barry Jenkins, director:
"I don't know about a message for race relations or anything like that, I think that you know, cinematically the stories of black people haven't been told as often as the stories of other people and I think that does a disservice to all of us because I think the black experience has a lot to say about the human experience, particularly the African American experience. So I don't have a mission statement, I just want to show black people in their full humanity and all the very different shades of gray and complications."
7. Various of Michelle Yeoh posing
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Michelle Yeoh, Actress:
"I think what it opened the doors to is the fact that the audiences want to see whether the female or the male lead, you know, stories about Asians, because we're so much a part of your community, aren't we? So why wouldn't we be part of the story-telling?"
9.Medium Alfonso Cuaron (center) posing on the carpet
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Alfonso Cuaron, director:
"I'm just happy to be here, man. I'm so happy that the film was nominated for Best Picture, a film that centers on a character that is a domestic worker from an indigenous background and I think that the presence here in the Academy Awards is already fantastic."
11. Civil rights leader John Lewis arriving on the red carpet
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. John Lewis (D-GA):
"I'm very proud. It's good to see the inclusion of people of different races, different backgrounds, and I love the idea that 'Green Book' is here, and 'Black Panther,' and others. When I was growing up in rural Alabama in the 40s and the 50s, there were some places that African Americans couldn't go and they needed a book. If they were traveling from Alabama, traveling from Mississippi or Georgia, they needed to know where they could stay and sleep and eat."
