2. SOUNDBITE (English) Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister:
"First he (US President Donald Trump) recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and moved the U.S. embassy here. Then he got out of the disastrous Iran treaty and reimposed sanctions. But now he did something of equal historic importance. He recognized Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights. And he did so at a time when Iran is trying to use Syria as a platform to attack and destroy Israel."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State:
"Tonight President Trump made the decision to recognize that that hard fought real estate, that important place is proper to be a sovereign part of the state of Israel. President Trump made a bold decision to recognize that an important decision for the people of Israel will truly be historic and the people of Israel should know that the battles they fought, the lives that they lost on that very ground were worthy and meaningful and important for all time. "

Israel's leader has thanked President Donald Trump for boldly recognizing Israel's control over the Golan Heights.
Israel captured the Golan, a strategic plateau overlooking northern Israel, from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed the area in 1981.
The international community considers the Golan to be occupied territory, and Syria has demanded its return as a condition for any future peace agreement.
After an eight-year civil war, peace talks with Israel are unlikely anytime soon.
Throughout the war, Israel has carried out scores of airstrikes in Syria to prevent Iran from establishing a permanent military presence there.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, standing alongside visiting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, rated this decision alongside that of moving the US embassy to Jerusalem and reimposing sanctions on Iran after pulling out of the nuclear deal.
"And the message that President Trump has given the world is that America stands by Israel, " he said.
Trump said Thursday that it's time for the United States to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights, an announcement that signals a shift in U.S. policy and comes ahead of the Israeli prime minister's planned visit next week to the White House.
Netanyahu is to be in Washington for two days next week - two weeks before Israel's April 9 ballot.
Netanyahu, facing a tough challenge from a popular former military chief and reeling from a series of corruption allegations, has repeatedly sought to focus attention on his foreign policy record and strong ties with Trump.
