"As you know 2020 is only one year away, and since Secretary Lew's departure we have not heard anything regarding the status of the currency redesign. Will the redesign meet the 2020 deadline, yes or no?
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Mnuchin, Treasury Secretary
"So, let let me comment that the primary reason we've looked at redesigning the currency is for counterfeiting issues. Based upon this, the $20 bill will now not come out till 2028. The $10 bill and the $50 bill will come out with new features beforehand. So, the answer is it is my responsibility now to focus on what is the issue of counterfeiting and the security features. The ultimate decision on the redesign will most likely be a another secretary down the road."
"Do you support Harriet Tubman being on the $20 bill? (Mnuchin) I've made no decision that relates to that, and that decision won't be made (Pressley) But there was a community process. (Mnuchin) until 2026. (Pressley) But there was a national, a community process. (Mnuchin) Again, it's a decision of the secretary of the treasury. Right now my focus is on security features. "
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Mnuchin, Treasury Secretary
(Pressley) What about imagery? What about the representation? (Mnuchin) Again, it's not a decision that is likely to come until a way past my term, even if I served the second term for the president. So I am not focused on that at the moment."
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said that a decision by his predecessor, Jacob Lew, to put African-American abolitionist leader Harriett Tubman on the $20 bill would be delayed and will not happen in 2020.
Mnuchin said that the redesigns were being made to protect the currency from counterfeiters and that other denominations had been deemed more critical to being redesigned than the $20 bill.
He said currently the decision on whether to put Tubman on the $20 bill in place of Andrew Jackson would likely not happen until 2026.
Even if Trump wins a second term and Mnuchin remained as Treasury secretary, Trump's second term would end in January 2025.
Trump during the 2016 campaign had criticized putting Tubman on the $20 bill in place of Jackson.
