1. SOUNDBITE (English) Nile Rodgers, Recording Artist
"It's hard to tell, first because my parents took me to music as a child. And when you're a child they sort of get lumped in together because my parents were beatniks and musicians were our friends so we would go to clubs free and we do this every night we, lived in the heart of Greenwich Village and every nightclub was only just a few blocks walk from our apartment.
So I don't know if the first thing I saw was Thelonius Monk or Gloria Lynn or Nina Simone or Miles Davis or Ahmed Jamal, I remember that I remember seeing Oscar Brown Jr. I remember seeing Sammy Davis Jr. I remember seeing Gloria, I already said Gloria Lynn but what was really funny. I remember seeing... Here's a sort of nasty story. But It was cool. There was a film an animated film that came out called 'Gay Paree' and the star was Judy Garland. And I saw her get drunk one day and walk out on stage in front of the film on 14th Street. I was a little kid and I went 'ahhh, Judy Garland is standing in front of the movie, singing' and she was drunk singing in front of the movie. It was the weirdest thing ever. But it was Judy Garland and what were they gonna say. 'Err Miss Garland. No. Can you get out from in front of the movie' but it actually happened, that's a true story."
