2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, (D) New York:
"This Supreme Court nominee Judge Kavanaugh is going to destroy women's reproductive freedom. We already know this about him. President Trump told us that anyone from his list would be there specifically to overturn Roe v. Wade."
3. Wide of protest organizer
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Edward John Markey, (D) Massachusetts:
"There is an anti environmental record which Brett Kavanaugh is bringing to his confirmation hearing. It is going to be critical that each and every one of you raise your voices so that the American people understand that clean air, that clean water is going to be in jeopardy because big polluters know that if Judge Kavanaugh becomes Justice Kavanaugh they know he will be the ultimate trump card on the Supreme Court to roll back environmental protections, rollback civil right laws, rollback protections for women."
5. Cutaway of protesters
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Richard Blumenthal, (D) Connecticut:
"The president would in effect be a monarch. The president would be a monarch if Brett Kavanaugh becomes a Supreme Court justice. I don't think Americans want an imperial presidency. Do you? (Response:NO!) I don't think so because right now we need checks and balances more than ever before with this president. We need a real check and balance not an imperial presidency."
7. Cutaway of protesters
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Jeff Merkley (D) Oregon:
"You know he believes that we should have maybe a kingdom and a king rather than a democratic republic and a president. He says that a president should never be indicted. Is that right? (Response:NO!) He says a president should never be investigated. Is that right? (Response:NO!) He says that a president doesn't like a law and thinks it's unconstitutional should be able to avoid the court or ignore the court. Is that right? (Response:NO!) You know I I see a constitution with checks and balances but Kavanaugh doesn't. So let's send him to serve in some country that has a kingdom and a king not here in the United States of America."
9. Wide of protest with capitol in background
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Mazie Hirono, (D) Hawaii:
"You know all of us who care about a woman's right to choose, about to the the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and all of these kinds of environmental laws that are there to protect the health safety and welfare of our communities. We have a lot of concerns. He also has a very expansive view of executive powers. So I'm concerned with this president particularly who uses his executive powers in ways that are way out of control in my opinion. We have a judge who may very well say you know what Mr. President you can pretty much do what you want."
11. Wide of Sen. Schumer at podium
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen.Chuck Schumer, (D) New York:
"This is a moral issue affecting America. This is an issue that we cannot lose. For the sake of people in the middle class for the sake of people struggling in the middle class. And I want to tell you I stand with you. We will not rest until Brett Kavanaugh is defeated and the American people win."
Democratic senators attend 'Rally to Stop Kavanaugh' as protesters gather to support opposition to the nomination of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Supporters of women's reproductive rights to organizations with environmental concerns and civil rights advocates all gathered at the capitol to protest president Donald Trumps Supreme Court nominee.

Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono, from Hawaii said, "All of us who care about a woman's right to choose, about to the the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and all of these kinds of environmental laws that are there to protect the health safety and welfare of our communities. We have a lot of concerns."
Senators also voiced concern that Kavanaugh would be an asset to President Trump in any matter that questioned executive powers and the ability to investigate and charge a sitting president for violations of criminal and civil law.
Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal said, "The president would be a monarch if Brett Kavanaugh becomes a Supreme Court justice. I don't think Americans want an imperial presidency."
He said, "Right now we need checks and balances more than ever before with this president."
