Scandanavian diplomats said on Saturday (29/6) that Burma's military regime was reluctant to authorise an autopsy by an international forensic expert on James Leander Nichols, the Danish honorary consul who died in a Rangoon prison a week ago. Nichols, an Anglo-Burmese businessman who also represented the interests of Norway, Finland and Switzerland, was sentenced in April to three years in prison and fined $5,000 for infringing laws regulating fax machines and telephone lines.
Denmark has demanded an independent autopsy on Nichols, 64. Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese opposition leader and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, was a friend of Nichols. She staged another pro-democracy rally in defiance of the military regime.
