The southern edge of the Chesapeake Bay began to churn as Hurricane Florence barreled toward the Carolinas on Thursday. But the rough surf and heavy winds failed to stop six fisherman from practicing a very old style of fishing in Virginia Beach.
Known as haul seine fishing, the men worked for hours trying to retrieve a large net that was strung hundreds of feet in the shallow water along the bay's edge.
They motored a jon boat into the heavy surf to try to raise an anchor weighing down one end of the net. When that didn't work, they swam out to the anchor, dragging along a heavy rope.
Each time they attached a line to pull out the anchor, the rope snapped.
