Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has been eager to point out the sharp rise in migrants arriving and crossing illegally into the United States. He has blamed the Biden Administration and issued a statement accusing the Biden administration of “abject failure when it comes to ensuring the safety of unaccompanied minors who cross our border.” While the US Border Patrol has not been granting access to news media as they apprehend and detain migrants, the Texas Department of Public Safety, whose responsibilities do not include enforcing federal immigration laws, offered news media tours of aerial and river patrols of the Rio Grande Valley.
From the vantage point of a Texas DPS helicopter, The Associated Press witnessed migrants crossing the river and groups of migrant teens on the access roads close to the river on the US side. A DPS boat tour showed access points where smugglers typically bring migrants from Mexico to the US side of the border.
