2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Najma Ahmed, Trauma Surgeon, St. Michael's Hospital:
"Last night, at St. Michael's Hospital, we received five of the gunshot victims from the tragic incident on the Danforth. As you can imagine, I'm not going to be able to provide any specific information about those patients. What I am able to tell you is that three of those patients underwent immediate lifesaving surgery in our operating rooms. All five of our patients remain in serious and critical condition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our first responders and police for their heroic efforts, as well to acknowledge the amazing work done by the nurses and doctors overnight in our emergency department, in the operating rooms, in the ICU and, in fact, throughout the hospital over the last many hours and finally I'd like to take the opportunity to ask our community to pray for all of the patients who were injured last night and their families."

On Sunday, a man walked along a Toronto street firing a handgun into restaurants and cafes, shooting 14 people and killing two before dying after an exchange of gunfire with police.
It was not immediately clear whether the man killed himself or died of injuries after being shot by police.
